This Veterans Day we celebrate the story of Tonya, our Resilient Air Force Veteran. 🇺🇸

Life threw unimaginable challenges at Tonya, a proud Air Force veteran forced into medical retirement. Diagnosed with MS in 2005 and paralyzed from the nose down in 2010, she found herself lost in despair. “This was a very dark period,” Tonya admits, “I wanted to quit many times.”

Then, light broke through at New Hope in the form of a one-eyed horse named Cyclops. This creature, marked by his own difference, offered something vital: unconditional acceptance.

“He won my heart in seconds,” Tonya says, remembering his instant affection, licking her and her wheelchair, completely oblivious to her disability. That moment – being seen simply as herself – sparked a flicker that grew into a flame.

Tonya embarked on a remarkable journey back, regaining mobility to the point of using a walker, and achieving the incredible milestone of returning to horseback, now partnered with Olivia.

Through her determination and hard work, Tonya has regained muscle strength and now stands 4 inches taller than when she began at New Hope.

Tonya’s story is a testament to the resilient human spirit and the healing power found in the simple, profound acceptance of an animal friend.

While many of our riders benefit from our therapeutic riding, veterans like Tonya find profound support through our Veterans Program, which utilizes Natural Horsemanship to address Post Traumatic Stress for veterans and first responders.
