Make sure you fulfill your dog’s genetic needs, otherwise they’ll fulfill themselves, sometimes in unpleasant ways.

Does your Aussie or Heeler try to herd people or other animals in the home?
Does your Terrier dig holes in the garden?
Does your Hound sniff literally everything?
Does your Lab or Golden pick anything and everything up?

If your dog tries herding things/people, try out a herding ball.
If your dog digs in the yard, give them a specific place to dig (like a sandbox or dig pit).
If your dog is always sniffing, try a snuffle mat or hide treats inside the house or the backyard for them to find.
If your dog is constantly picking things up, try putting it on a cue and make a game of it.

Try to find ways to provide outlets for your dog in an appropriate manner, and you could see a significant decrease in them practicing the behavior outside of the provided times.

Most people have hobbies or things they really enjoy doing; allow your dog that same privilege.

By finding ways to include yourself in these outlets, it can help strengthen your bond with your dog as well!

Owners and families often eagerly join in their dog’s training, but sometimes, their enthusiasm can lead to unintended consequences.

When multiple people give commands, it becomes confusing! Who should the dog listen to? Can the dog even identify who is saying what?

As trainers, we love having the whole family participate, but it’s crucial to ensure we don’t inadvertently overwhelm the dog.

During sessions, only one person should give the dog a command at a time, typically the one holding the leash.

If someone starts a command, allow them to complete it without interference. Avoid undermining or micromanaging the situation unless assistance is requested.

When involving kids, have a pre-session conversation to ensure everyone gets a turn. Patience is key; wait for your turn to contribute!
