One of the biggest errors I see owners make when I ask them to call their dog is that they don’t get animated! In the 1st clip I call Reese not moving my body, using a lower tone voice, and overall looking pretty boring or maybe even angry. Reese who’s a highly trained service dog still responds, and comes to me although she’s a little reluctant. However, when asking clients to practice recalling their dog I often see them with this same “frozen” look. Most of the time their dog won’t even bat an eye in their direction let alone come to them. In the second clip I get super animated- moving backwards, patting my legs, & sounding exciting! As you can see Reese comes alive and springs into action! I encourage clients and any dog owners out there reading this to get animated with your dog! Be fun and inviting when recalling them especially when it’s around a distraction. You have to compete with the environment when you call your dog, so you must be more interesting! Basically act like your inviting them over for something really fun like a game of chase. You can even use a game of chase, a game of tug, or a game of fetch as your reward when they successfully recall. Or keep it simple and give them a tasty snack.
