Good Intentions Are Not Always Enough. 😞
Today, we took in a dozen cats and kittens from someone who believed they were helping them.
Cases like this rarely begin with cruelty. They often begin with compassion, taking in one animal, then another, believing each one has been "saved", but without spaying and neutering, adequate resources, veterinary care and the ability to say “no,” the situation can grow faster than one person can manage.
The caregiver becomes overwhelmed. Living conditions deteriorate. Animals become sick, reproduce and compete for limited food, space and attention. Because the person still sees themselves as the animals’ protector, they may minimize the conditions, resist assistance or genuinely be unable to recognize how serious things have become.
That is how good intentions can become animal hoarding and how “helping” can ultimately result in prolonged suffering.
We will continue assisting with the animals remaining in this situation, including multiple dogs. Our goal is always to offer education, resources and a path forward whenever possible, but help must be accepted and conditions must improve. 🙏
When animals are living without adequate sanitation, medical care, nutrition or safe housing, intent no longer changes the outcome. If intervention is refused and the animals continue to suffer, the situation may cross from being overwhelming into criminal neglect.
Asking for help before reaching that point is not failure. Recognizing your limits is part of responsible care. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for an animal is admit that you cannot do it alone - even as a Municipal Shelter, we can recognize that.
