The day after the 4th of July is one of the biggest days that the shelters fill up due to pets being scared by fireworks and running away.

Here are some safety tips from The American Veterinary Medical Association to help keep you pets safe.

Fireworks, picnics and other 4th of July traditions can be great fun for people, but frightening and dangerous for animals. Know how to keep your animals safe.

All funds raised by H.A.L.O. go towards the care of our animals while they wait for their forever home. Sometimes we come across ones that need extra care at an extra cost. Right now we have two such kittens in our care and are working on raising funds to help provide them with the medical care they need.

Here are their stories:

Camellia
---------
Camellia was a lucky kitten, she was born into Halo. Her mother was a stray who came to us very pregnant. She was taken in, and gave birth within a week. Camellia was the second kitten of six, born on Feb. 6th, 2025.

She grew up normally, and before you knew it, she was spayed and went up for adoption with her sister, Daisy. They were adopted by a wonderful family with twin boys and 2 male kittens.

Shortly after they moved into their new home, it was noticed that Camellia was panting after she would play. A trip to the vet revealed that she has a heart murmur.

Camellia needs to see a Cardiologist for further diagnostic tests. We are raising funds to help offset the cost of this visit, estimated to be $1195.

Peanut
--------
Our first clue that Peanut is unique came when we realized that she backs herself down from cat towers, rather than jumping off of them head-first. Then we noticed her running right into things, like furniture, rather than going around it. From playing with her, we know that she can at least see a little bit because she can track an object if it’s held in just the right spot. But if that object is right in front of her eyes, she doesn’t seem to be able to see it.

The vet confirmed that something is off with her vision and suggested an ophthalmologist visit to find out more. Hopefully we can take her to see one so that that it can be determined exactly what her special needs are. We are raising funds to help offset her medial costs.
