DOG OVERHEATING: READ THIS BEFORE YOUR PUP MELTS

Maryland summers hit hard, and dogs overheat fast. Once their temp climbs above 103°F, things get dangerous quickly.

Signs your dog is too hot: • Heavy panting • Drooling like a faucet • Bright red gums • Slowing down or acting confused • Vomiting or diarrhea • Collapse (emergency)

If your dog overheats: • Get them out of the heat • Cool water on the body (not cold) • Wet towels on neck/armpits/groin • Small sips of cool water • Cool until temp is under 103°F • Vet if they don’t perk up fast

Prevent it: • No midday workouts • Fresh water all day • Never leave them in a car • Cooling gear + shade • Walk early morning or evening

DOG OVERHEATING: What Every Maryland Pet Parent Needs to Know Before Your Pup Turns Into a Puddle

Summer’s here, and our dogs are convinced that chasing a ball in 97°F heat is still a great idea. But overheating happens fast, and once a dog’s internal temp climbs above 103°F, they’re already in the danger zone.

Here’s what to watch for: • Excessive panting that sounds like a busted fan • Heavy drooling • Bright red gums or tongue • Sudden lethargy • Wobbliness or confusion • Vomiting or diarrhea • Collapse or seizures (emergency)

If your dog starts overheating: • Move them to shade or AC immediately • Pour cool (not cold) water over their body • Use wet towels on the neck, armpits, and groin • Offer small sips of cool water • Keep cooling until their temp drops below 103°F • Head to the vet if they’re not improving quickly

Prevention is the real win: • No midday workouts • Unlimited access to fresh water • Never leave your dog in a car • Use cooling mats, vests, or shaded rest spots • Save fetch and long walks for early morning or evening

4th of July Prep for Fireworks Season

Fireworks season is almost here, and while we love the celebrations, the loud booms can be overwhelming for our dogs. The key is preparing early — long before the first spark hits the sky.

Desensitization helps your dog stay calm. Start now by creating a safe space like a bed or crate, then practice with low‑volume fireworks videos. Gradually increase the sound only when your dog stays relaxed. On July 4th, give them a long walk and plenty of playtime so they’re tired before the celebrations begin. When the fireworks start, send them to their safe space with a good chew to keep them focused and content.

Your leadership matters. Stay calm, neutral, and confident. Dogs read our energy, and if we panic or over‑comfort them, we can accidentally reinforce the fear. Your steady presence helps them understand the noise isn’t a threat.

With preparation and calm leadership, your dog can handle fireworks night successfully.
