When my mother, June, passed away she had a senior cat named "Ninety Nine." That's when June's Senior Cat Rescue was born.

We are a 501c3 organization dedicated to rescuing senior cats from high kill shelters, promoting the adoption of older cats, and educating people about the benefits of adopting older pets. No one in our family wanted her, so I decided to drive to California to get Ninety Nine. On the long drive home, I decided that I had to do something to help the senior cats who are left homeless when their owner passes away or becomes too ill to care for them. Thanks, mom for inspiring me to help the seniors!

Help Betty B and Ti**en Find a Home

We’re asking our Facebook friends and family to help find a good home for two cats currently in Laredo, Texas. Betty B is blind, and her companion, Ti**en, helps guide her around. Here is the story shared with us.

Why They Need Help
Someone in Laredo contacted us about two cats initially described as seniors. We were told that their owner, a war veteran, had been evicted and moved into an assisted living facility that does not allow pets. His daughter is in Texas helping him, but she returns home next week. The cats urgently need a place to go; otherwise, she plans to have them euthanized. Our contact also reported that veterinarians in Laredo will euthanize healthy animals because of the large number of unwanted cats there.

Meet the Cats
• Betty B is 2 years old and blind.
• Ti**en is 4 years old and helps guide Betty B around.

Rescue situations can change quickly. In a follow-up call, our Texas contact clarified that these cats are not seniors. Their owner kept them indoors because Betty B is blind, but neither cat had been spayed or neutered, and Betty B even had kittens. Over time, the owner also established a colony of cats outdoors. Betty's kittens are 12 weeks old now and we believe someone in TX will help them.

Travel and Support
Although we focus on senior cat rescue, their story moved us to help. We do not currently have a suitable placement for them. Their owner’s daughter has agreed to pay for spaying or neutering and vaccinations so they can travel to New Mexico with a health certificate.

Cindy, a good friend of the rescue, is trying to arrange a Southwest Airlines flight for them—thank you, Cindy! Once they arrive, they will need a home or a rescue placement. We are willing to pay for food, supplies and medical care for anyone who adopts them or for a rescue that takes them in.

June's Volunteers: We want your opinions!

Our volunteers are critical to our work in providing a safe haven for orphaned and abandoned senior cats. We know life gets busy, and we want to create volunteer opportunities that are meaningful, flexible and enjoyable. Several senior cats at the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department need extra TLC. We would love to be able to help them but we need foster homes. To become a Furever Foster, complete an application at https://jscr.org/programs/foster/
We cover veterinary care, food, and litter as needed; you provide the love and companionship.

Here are a few of the senior cats currently at the shelter who need us:

Jade — 16 years old. Her owner surrendered her because they could no longer care for her. Volunteers describe Jade as social and affectionate: she comes forward for attention, enjoys gentle pets, and has a good appetite—especially for wet food. She would do best in a quiet, adult only home.

Batman — 14 years old and found as a stray. Batman is stressed at the shelter. Volunteers have stated that he greets them and gladly accepts pets.

Big Betty Spaghetti — 11 years old, diabetic, and surrendered by her owner. She is social and friendly, enjoys gentle pets and being brushed, and responds with an “elevator butt.”

Here is Butch playing with one of our volunteers at Hannah’s House.
When Butch, 14, first arrived, he had severe anemia and was very lethargic. Now after a few weeks of treatment, he is doing so much better.

Despite the rain and thunder, people still came out to support us yesterday! Moral of the story is if you want to have a yard sale but they are predicting rain, go ahead and have it because people will show up!

We want to thank all of our wonderful volunteers who spent their Saturday helping us!
