Inspired by Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA), we want to discuss credentialed veterinary technicians and non-credentialed staff here in Georgia.

“Veterinary technician” is not just a title bestowed by a job. It is a hard fought career path that begins with specialized schooling, followed through with a national exam, and arriving in an amazing community of passionate, skilled, and knowledgeable individuals who are here to help animals.

In Georgia, a veterinary technician comes from 1 of 3 backgrounds:
1) Attended an AVMA-CVTEA approved vet tech program, passed the VTNE, and passed the GA vet tech law exam.
2) Transferred an out of state license
3) Grandfathered-in when title protection was established - this allowed individuals already working under the title of “veterinary technician” and performing tasks now reserved for veterinary technicians to apply for a license now that there were legal boundaries to work within.

All of the above must renew their license every two years, must attend medical and Legal, Ethical, and Professional (LEAP) continuing education, and remain in good standing.

Veterinary Medicine would not be possible without professionals at every level - from veterinarians, to licensed veterinary technicians, to veterinary assistants and receptionists, as well as every role in between. We are all in this together ❤️

🚨 It’s Technician Appreciation Week! 🚨
At Catskill Veterinary Services, we like to call it Staff Appreciation Week — because it truly takes our entire team to make the magic happen. ✨

Across our three hospitals — Rock Hill, Middletown, and Newburgh — it takes over 90 incredible team members to keep things running smoothly every single day. From our licensed veterinary technicians, assistants, client service representatives, kennel attendants, and doctors — every single person plays a vital role in caring for our patients and clients. 🐾

Our team works long days, sacrifices weekends and holidays, and braves every kind of Hudson Valley weather — all to provide life-changing, life-saving care to animals of all kinds. 🌧️🌞❄️

This week (and every week), we celebrate YOU — the heart and soul of Catskill Veterinary Services. 💙
Thank you for your dedication, compassion, and teamwork.
We Do More — because of you. 🩺💪

Happy National Veterinary Technician Week! 🐾🎉

This week, October 12th-18th, we proudly celebrate the vital role veterinary technicians play in animal health care. We recognize the compassion, expertise, and dedication that vet techs bring to every patient, every day.

Vet techs are more than support staff—they are anesthetists, radiographers, dental hygienists, surgical assistants, lab techs, client educators, and above all, passionate advocates for animal welfare.

𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞 𝗬𝗢𝗨 for everything you do! 🫂❤

NYSAVT wanted to keep the inspiration from Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA) and Georgia Veterinary Technician Association going - so here is a breakdown of the difference between licensed veterinary technicians and non-licensed veterinary staff. Every veterinary professional is appreciated! This week focuses on one of the pivotal levels of veterinary care - LVTs.

NYS Licensed veterinary technicians uphold one of the state’s over 50 regulated titles. New York has over 6,000 LVTs!

A NY LVT: Must successfully graduate from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited college and complete over 300 required and recommended skills. These skills cover multiple species - such as dogs, cats, horses, ruminants, avian, rats, rabbits and mice.

They then must take and pass a rigorous (and expensive) licensing exam of over 150 questions pertaining to nursing care, dentistry, anesthesia, pain management, communications, laboratory procedures, pharmacology, diagnostic imaging, surgical nursing, emergency and critical care.

Every 3 years they must complete 24 continuing education hours to renew their license.

“‘Veterinary technician’ is not just a title, It is a hard fought career path that begins with specialized schooling, followed through with a national exam, and arriving in an amazing community of passionate, skilled, and knowledgeable individuals who are here to help animals.“

Spread the word and show some love to a veterinary technician (retired, former, current, student) in your life! 💙
