“You will be helping to save a life.” ❤️🐾

Meet Indy: a calm, laid-back lurcher with a serious love for sofa naps, beach walks in Skerries, and his favourite squeaky apple.

Adopted from the KWWSPCA in April 2025, Indy settled into family life straight away and is as “good as gold ever since.” Nearly a year on, his owners say they “could not imagine life without him.”

That’s exactly why they chose to bring him to the Pet Emergency Hospital Blood Donor Clinic.

“I had seen posts on Facebook about other dogs who had donated blood and I thought what a lovely thing to do to help another sick dog… if anything ever happened to Indy and he needed a transfusion I know how important it is to have supplies of blood.”

From the moment they arrived, the experience was reassuring:

“The PEH staff were lovely and very professional Ken the Vet put us at our ease and talked us through the procedure.”

After a short sedation, Indy rested up, “he pretty much slept until the next morning”, and by the next day?

“Completely back to normal… wanting his breakfast and a walk and playing enthusiastically with his squeaky apple.”

Simple. Safe. Life-saving.

And Indy’s message to other dog owners?

“Go for it — even if you just do it once, you will be helping to save a life and what a wonderful thing that is to be able to do for a sick pet and their family.”

Could your dog be a lifesaver?

Donal, a four-year-old Lurcher with a big personality, was rushed to the Pet Emergency Hospital after a bad fall left him with a severely broken front leg.

When he arrived, our team moved quickly to stabilise him, manage his pain, and keep him comfortable through the night.

Donal was admitted for emergency care overnight before being referred the next morning to UCD Veterinary Hospital for specialist orthopaedic surgery.

His recovery wasn’t easy. It involved multiple procedures and six weeks of intensive antibiotics, but Donal showed incredible resilience every step of the way.

His owner said: "It was a tough time, but the staff honestly couldn’t have done any more for him. He was so well cared for every step of the way by the vets and nurses."

Today, Donal is back where he belongs,
running freely along the beach, full of life again. 🐾

If your pet is ever seriously injured or unwell, our emergency team is here when you need us. If your pet was a patient at PEH, reach out to us, we'd love to hear from you.

Clinical Director at PEH Dr Claire Desmond and PEH vets Jill Regan and Gemma Gallagher came to speak to students of 's .vetpal for an interactive session on shock, focusing on early recognition, decision-making under pressure, and (most importantly) when not to reach straight for fluids.

Dr Desmond says, "There was brilliant engagement from the group, with thoughtful questions and strong clinical instincts throughout. It is encouraging to see the next generation of vets and nurses coming through with this level of curiosity and commitment."

One Sunday, Bo suddenly became extremely unwell and began vomiting large amounts of blood. His family rushed him straight to the Pet Emergency Hospital, arriving as quickly as they could.
Our emergency team immediately began stabilising him. Bo was admitted for urgent care and diagnostics, including blood testing and ultrasound scanning, while being supported with intravenous fluids and medication. These tests revealed prolonged clotting times and a critically low platelet count.
The following morning, once Bo was stable, he was referred to our colleagues at UCD Veterinary Hospital for further management of suspected immune-mediated thrombocytopenia.
Bo spent the next week receiving intensive care, including a life-saving blood transfusion.
Today, he’s back to his usual self: running, sniffing, and filling the family group chat with photos once again.
