Dog walkers at a Wigan beauty spot are being asked to keep pets on leads and ‘out of the water’ after the death of a beloved spaniel which became ill shortly after entering a stream 💔
Environmental health officers have started an investigation into possible water contamination at the Three Sisters nature reserve in Ashton after the death of seven-year-old springer spaniel Angel, who died on Wednesday April 8 after a family walk on Easter Monday.
Angel’s owner Tom said Angel was ‘the best friend to everyone in our family’ and her passing has left them ‘devastated’.
He added: “It was a nice weather so I took my lads and Angel to explore the woods near the ‘fairy glen’. You know what spaniels are like, they’re always in and out of water and I think she drank some, but I didn’t think anything of it. Her paws seemed to have bit of a rusty residue on them, but I thought it was just a bit of muddy water.
“After we left Three Sisters and got back in the car, she appeared slightly unwell. At the time, we thought this was motion sickness, as she was not used to travelling by car. “Importantly, she did not consume anything else after drinking from the stream.
“She deteriorated very quickly. After becoming unwell on Monday night refusing food and water, she died on Wednesday afternoon after suffering a seizure. The speed at which she declined was extremely rapid.” 💔
Having been informed of the incident on Friday, Wigan council said they had ‘no definitive findings about the cause at this early stage’.
They added that as a precaution, signs will be put up near where Angel entered the stream to ask that dogs are kept on a lead and out of the water until the investigation is complete.
