How to potty train your puppy in 4 simple steps! π©
House training is one of those issues that all new puppy parents face. It can also be one of the most stressful and relationship damaging (both with puppy and other family members π
) parts of taking on a new puppy. So if you're struggling with this, then you're definitely not alone!!
But, house training doesn't have to be difficult. There are a few simple rules you can follow to help your puppy get the hang of it in no time!
1) Opportunity πΆ - give your puppy as much opportunity to get it right as you can! Taking them out every as often as you can or even leaving the door open for them.
2) Reward πͺ - Help your puppy understand when they've got in right and make them want to try and toilet there again by giving the best reward the moment they go (not when they come back in).
3) Clean π© - If they have an accident inside, clean it up as quickly as you can with odour removing cleaner. At the same time, try not to tell your puppy off for these mistakes or they could become scared to toilet in front of you, even in the garden!
4) Sniff & Distractions π½ - Sniffing helps to stimulate dogs to go to the toilet, especially if they can smell where they have been before. However, too many other distractions can cause puppies to forget they need the toilet. So it can be helpful to take puppies out on the lead and encourage sniff, while keeping them away from other distractions!
πΎRemember house training is half learning, half genetics - they need to develop the physical control as well as learn where to toilet. Each puppy is different, so work with the puppy in front of you! πΎ
