I may be a bit slow at replying this week. It's Tommy's 4th birthday soon (🥺😱 4 already?!) so we've taken him to The Lakes.

He's very happy with the view, the lodge, his super king sized bed, the ice cream, the beach, the water sports, the play area, the tv and everything else 😂

What a lovely place Haverigg is. 🌊😌🎂✌️

Are they fed? Are they watered? Is everyone okay?
Then that is absolutely enough. 😅
Leave the "teaching them not to jump up" for September. Stop stressing that you don't feel 100% confident with them off the lead yet. Just park it all until the kids go back to school.

If you are juggling a dog and the summer holidays right now, take the pressure off. Just surviving the chaos is a massive win!

Drop a ☕️ if you are officially in summer mode! 👇

A dog's brain is heavily dominated by their olfactory bulb, which is proportionately 40 times larger than ours. Processing smells requires massive cognitive energy, meaning that just 15 minutes of intensive sniffing actually lowers their cortisol (stress hormone) and releases dopamine.

This intense mental exertion leaves them far more exhausted, relaxed, and content than a simple physical march on the pavement.

So if you can't walk them, ditch the guilt.

Scatter their food in the grass or let them do a slow, 10-minute sniff around the block, and go put your feet up!

Does anyone have a dog that loves a sniff or will you need to teach them? 👇

The number one worry that comes up in my 1-to-1 sessions is that their dog will become reactive and bark at absolutely everything.
Agree?

Here are the other top fears that constantly pop up:

2️⃣ Resource guarding.

3️⃣ Separation anxiety (aka tripping over your dog on the way to the bathroom because they simply won't leave your side 🤦‍♀️).

4️⃣ Never being able to trust them off lead, stuck on lead forever or only secure dog fields.

Any more? Did you think the same?

How good has the breeze been today?! And I could actually sleep last night! 🥵 Another hot week coming, thank you to everyone who's been happy to move sessions. Just no way we could get our dogs to concentrate in this heat. Hoping this cooler stuff lasts a bit longer though 🤞

Please tell me the end is in sight?... (trying not to be a misery, I know it's summer but just a touch cooler would be fab 👌)

I know, I know—everything tells you to 'socialise, socialise, socialise!'

If they're barking? Socialise. If they're nervous? Socialise.

But constantly trying to force your dog to say hello to every dog and person you pass is often the worst thing you can do. You aren't building a "sociable" dog; you’re teaching them they’re entitled to interact with everyone.

The result? Lead frustration—barking, lunging, and shaking the second they can’t get to that "friend."

We want a calm, take-anywhere family dog, right? So aim for neutral presence instead. Teach them that they can be relaxed around other dogs without needing to touch noses with them.

Stop collecting "friends" for your dog on every walk, and start building a dog that’s happy just hanging out by your side. 🐾

If you keep walking then up to everyone because 'you just want them to get used to them', then I'll see you in 6 months when your dog is jumping, lunging, barking and kicking off when on lead or worse, running up to every dog they see if they're off lead.
