The last two weeks of the Out + About classes have gone really well!

We’ve been taking our training out into the real world, visiting the country park and heading into town to work around everyday distractions like bikes, people and dogs. We’ve been building on engagement with their owners, heelwork and all the other foundation skills we’ve been working on.

They’re all doing so well, and it’s been brilliant to watch both the dogs and their owners grow in confidence each week. 🐾

It’s been a busy few weeks (as always!) here with my 1:1s. Alongside all my regular clients, I’ve also had a lovely mix of new faces starting.

🐾 Floss is a Labradoodle who gets very excited when she’s out and about, so we’ll be working on loose lead walking, staying calm around other dogs, and her manners when people come to the house.

🐾 Barney is a Basset Hound. He’s quite nervous around other dogs, so we’re working on helping him ignore dogs on walks and build his confidence.

🐾 Duke is a 5-year-old Labrador. He gets overwhelmed in new environments, so we’re working on helping him process new situations without becoming overstimulated.

🐾 Dexter is a Goldendoodle. He loves other dogs so much that he lies down in the hope they’ll come over to say hello! We’re working on heeling past dogs, focusing on his mum, and disengaging from distractions.

🐾 Loki is a Cane Corso cross and a very excitable puppy! We’re working on emotional regulation, the usual puppy foundations and boundaries, and staying calmer when he’s out and about around people.

🐾 Lastly, we have Gizmo. He’s quite nervous around traffic, pulls on the lead, and barks at other dogs because he wants to say hello! We’re working on helping him feel more relaxed out and about, as well as ignoring dogs and other everyday distractions.

I’m looking forward to seeing how they all progress over the next few weeks. 🐶

It’s been a week of very early starts… 4am alarms haven’t been much fun! 😴

But it means the dogs have still been able to get out for their walks before the heat, see their friends and have a good sniff around. For those where it just wasn’t safe to walk, we’ve swapped walks for pop-ins, garden playtime, enrichment and plenty of fuss instead.

As much as I know the dogs love their walks, their safety will always come first. I’d much rather change the plan and start earlier than risk them getting too hot.

Hopefully some cooler temperatures are on the way soon! 🐾

Week 1 of the Out + About course done!

This week we took the dogs’ existing skills out into the real world and started working around everyday distractions.

It was really nice for the owners to see just how different training can feel once you add in all the extra smells, people, dogs, birds and everything else going on around them. The dogs definitely found it harder than they do at home or in the training hall, but that’s exactly why we’re here.

The aim of this course is to help owners build dogs that can cope with real-life situations, one step at a time. I’m looking forward to seeing how much they all progress over the next few weeks. 🐾

I know how restrictive life can feel when you have a dog who’s reactive, disengaged, or just seems “naughty” and embarrassing to take out.

When I got Millie, I quickly realised just how difficult it could be. Before her, I’d always had Milo, who I could take anywhere without a second thought. As you can see from the videos, Millie really struggled.

That’s what led me into dog training. We worked on building her confidence, resilience, engagement with me, and her ability to disengage from the things she found difficult. Over time, she became a much more emotionally balanced dog who could enjoy being out + about.

Don’t get me wrong, she still has her moments, she’s a dog, not a robot! But she’s a pleasure to take out now. She comes pretty much everywhere with me, and I feel confident doing so.

That’s exactly what I want for other owners and their dogs.

It’s why I’ve created my new Out + About course, to help owners feel confident taking their dogs out into the real world. It’s also the goal behind most of my 1:1 sessions and training.

Because it’s not just about having an obedient dog. It’s about having a confident, emotionally balanced dog, and an owner who can enjoy spending time with them without the stress🐾
