Fungi Fest Photography Competition! 🍄📸

The Secret Fungi Festival at Careys Secret Garden is fast approaching and prep is going brilliantly! We have so many FUNgi things up our sleeves this year. 🙌

As we all know fungi are quite the photogenic little creatures and we hear there's some keen photographers amongst you, so we thought it would be nice to showcase this at this years event.

It doesn't matter how much photographic experience you have, we want you to submit that ONE mushroom photo that you're MOST chuffed with! Please email your entries & d.o.b to [email protected] uk

We'll accept portrait or landscape images and please ensure they're a decent quality so we can print them!

We will shortlist two categories (under 16's and adults) prior to the Fungi Fest, and the selected photos will be printed and on display during the festival.

Attendees will be able to vote for their favourite over the weekend and the winner will be announced on Sunday! 🏆

And yes..there will be prizes!! 🍄🚀

🍄🥃 Mushrooms + Liqueur… because why not?!

We’re absolutely delighted to have joined forces with our farm friend and fellow food-loving creative, Mat Follas, who now runs Mure Liqueurs after winning some Master Chef show?

We started throwing ideas around, and before long we were wondering what would happen if we combined our lovely Lion’s Mane with Mat’s rather lovely Coffee Rum Liqueur...🤔

Mat made a small trial batch, and it pretty much disappeared over the weekend! So, naturally, we’ve taken that as a sign that we might be onto something…

He’s now working on a much larger production batch, and we cannot wait to see where this little experiment takes us...We absolutely love collaborating with passionate, creative people. There’s something brilliant about taking two things you love and thinking, “I wonder what would happen if we put these together?”

Big thanks to Mat and Mure 🙌..catch us at the farm and we'll likely give you a sample..or catch Mat at various events around the South, like Dorset Food & Drink Great Dorset Chilli Festival The Sherborne Market Bath Christmas Market and Swanage Fish & Food Festival to name a few 🫡

Morning Fungi Folks 🍄🙌

The rain has finally arrived and that can only mean one thing..Mushroom Season is open! 🥰

To celebrate we thought we'd drop this little number, to show our appreciation to the wonderful world of mushrooms!

We once again reached out to Matt at Out of Key Merch and let him work his magic! These are screen-printed on 180gsm 100% organic cotton in this really cool natural, raw colour. While we were at it we had a cheeky batch of foraging tote bags produced in black too 🖤

Quick check up on the shroomz before we lock up, they enjoy a little SOAD for their bedtime story 🤟

So some studies show that there's a link between music and mushrooms....acoustic vibrations appear to cause the mycelium to generate 10-15% faster?!...perhaps the heavy metal explains our nice meaty mushrooms 💪

Native Velvet Shanks, cloned from a wild fruiting body less than a mile from the farm 🍄💛

It's abit warm for us to fruit these at this time of year... this species loves the cooler climate and will actually withstand temps below zero thanks to the antifreeze proteins (AFPs) found within the fruiting bodies. These proteins stop the formation of microscopic ice crystals within the mushroom cells resulting in the frozen mushrooms thawing and not turning to mush! Clever shrooms 🍄🤓

Given they love the cold so much..we decided to pop these in the walk in chiller where it's a rather fresh 8°c..and fruited them there instead 🤣🤣

In the calendar we were down to attend a food fair on Sunday at the RNLI in Poole...turns out I dropped a clanger and it was actually today! 😅🤦

Plan B.. We've got several kilos of fresh Lions Mane and Oyster mushrooms aswell as growkits, mushroom salts and the last of the Lions Mane peanut butter! - From 10am-3pm we'll open our doors at Duck Farm Workshops and have our own little fungi food fair! 🤣🍄

📢 WE NEED YOUR HELP 🙌

Over the years we've taken thousands on fungi forays. Quite often getting comments like "no walk in the woods has ever been the same after joining your walk" and a classic "I've been spotting so many mushrooms this year, where have they been all my life"

Now we've settled in nicely at Duck Farm Workshops in Puddletown, we thought we'd start exploring the possibility of running our fungi forays in our local forest..seemed like a no brainer!
.until we contacted Forestry England and immediately hit the red tape and bureaucracy.

What we assumed might be a few risk assessments and a small fee for the privilege, in reality turned into quite the monster. On completion of the application gauntlet and £88 for the 'fees' we were made aware our public liability insurance of £5m wasn't going to be sufficient to cover us to take a dozen people at a time, for a walk in the woods! 🤯

After sifting through our options the only way forward was to bolt on an extra £5m to our existing policy with a second insurer to give us the £10m we needed. This came in at an eye watering £860 for the privilege and now we're abit stuck!

We've beaten the insurers down a little and have already received some very generous donations from folk wanting to help, but we're still a little way off being able to run these walks. Ironically we had planned to offer alot of these walks to locals in the community for free, with the proviso that we do a fungi ID walk with a litter pick. We wouldn't make a penny off these walks, just sharing knowledge and tidying up the local forest..still Forestry England couldn't budge on their policies 🤷
