Most behaviour problems don’t exist in isolation.

When owners come to me because their dog is reactive, anxious, hyperactive, destructive, struggles to settle, or seems unable to cope with everyday life, I’m not just looking at the behaviour itself.

I’m looking at the whole dog.

✔️ Are their natural behavioural needs being met?
✔️ Are they getting enough sleep?
✔️ Are they stressed?
✔️ Could there be pain or physical discomfort involved?
✔️ How is their nutrition and digestive health?

Because behaviour doesn’t happen in a vacuum. We now know there’s a huge connection between physical wellbeing, gut health, stress resilience, emotional regulation and behaviour. That’s why I always encourage owners to think beyond training drills alone and take a whole-dog approach.

I’ve partnered with Tuggs because their supplements are designed to support gut health, digestion and overall wellbeing as part of a broader lifestyle approach to helping dogs feel and function at their best. ♥️

If you’d like to try them, there’s 30% off through the link in my bio. 🐾

📌 Save this reel for your next training session; just 5 minutes of body awareness work can make a surprising difference to your dog’s confidence, coordination, and training skills.

Most people think body awareness exercises are just fun tricks… But they’re actually one of the best ways to help your dog develop coordination, confidence, balance, problem-solving skills, and a greater awareness of their own body.

Every time your dog carefully places a paw, adjusts their position, or figures out how to move from A to B, they’re doing far more than following a cue. They’re learning where their feet are, how to control their body, and how to solve physical challenges…

And that’s incredibly valuable!

Body awareness training helps strengthen the connection between your dog’s brain and body, encouraging them to think about movement rather than simply moving.

That’s why these exercises are used in everything from agility and canine fitness to freestyle, gundog training, and rehabilitation programmes.

The benefits can include:

✨ Improved coordination and balance
✨ Greater rear-end awareness
✨ Increased confidence
✨ Better problem-solving skills
✨ Improved athleticism
✨ Easier learning of future training skills

And you don’t need any fancy equipment - all I used here was an old cake tin, and two encyclopaedias!

Dogs truly get to experiment, succeed, and discover solutions for themselves, and that sense of accomplishment can be hugely empowering, particularly for adolescent dogs, nervous dogs, or dogs who need a confidence boost. 🐾

There’s something in dog training called the Premack Principle.

Which basically means we can use behaviours dogs REALLY want to do… to reinforce behaviours they’d normally find much harder.

Example: You drop tasty food on the floor.

Most likely choice for your dog?➡️ Divebomb the food immediately.

Least likely choice?➡️ Disengage from it.➡️ Pause.➡️ Move away.➡️ Check in with you instead.

But this is where we can start to rewire behavioural responses… because if accessing the food becomes dependent on disengagement first, then over time, disengagement itself starts becoming stronger and more likely.

THIS is how you start hacking the brain away from ‘OMG I MUST HAVE THAT NOW’ impulsive responses, and towards ‘Pause first, think first…’ cognitive type responses.

Which is exactly what this week’s exercise inside the membership is building… 👀 Actual emotional regulation and thoughtful behaviour around distraction.

I think one of the most underrated mindset shifts in dog training… is realising that training doesn’t ONLY have to be about solving problems.

Sometimes training can simply be about unlocking more of the world together.

The random little side quest skills? They matter more than people think. And no, it’s not because your dog desperately needs to ride around in a handbag sidecar… 😂 But because every new skill builds communication, confidence, optimism, adaptability, and trust. And sometimes those tiny skills quietly become life changing.

This silly little bag training project means Albie can now come with me to MORE places, for MORE adventures, and we can enjoy MORE experiences together. And honestly… I love that! (Does he?! I’ll let you know…!)

But I really do think training becomes so much more fun when we stop asking: ‘How do I stop my dog doing XYZ?’ …and start also asking:

✨ “What could I teach my dog that would make both of our worlds bigger?” ✨

A café settle… maybe a bike basket or a paddle board… a carry bag… or even a suitcase trolley for the chaos and lore..! 😂

But let’s normalise training for joy. Normalise dog training side quests. Normalise teaching frivolous skills that actually unlock more life together ☀️🐾

So tell me… if you could teach your dog ONE fun little life-upgrade skill, what would it be? 👀

WELCOME TO YOUR SUMMER OF SIDE QUESTS ☀️🐾

Consider this your official invitation to stop making dog training feel like homework.

This summer, we’re swapping pressure for play, perfection for adventure, and burnout for tiny little quests that actually make you excited to hang out with your dog again. Because sometimes the fastest way to transform behaviour… is to STOP obsessing over behaviour for five minutes and start building joy, connection, confidence, optimism, and engagement instead.

Every week, I’m giving you a brand new side quest to try with your dog (Hit follow so you never miss a new one! ✅)

Some might seem silly. Some will be surprisingly powerful. All of them are secretly designed to make your training better.

And by the end of the summer?

You’re not just going to have a better behaved dog… You’re going to feel like an awesome dog owner again.

✨ Send this to your dog-owning bestie because congratulations… you’re accountability buddies now! 🙌

If you’ve recently unlocked teenage mode in your adolescent dog, it’s important that you understand: feelings are at an all-time high, and logic is at an all-time low. So what can you do about it to make sure the chaos you’re struggling with now doesn’t become their adult personality?

Here are my four top tips on what to do and where to focus your energy:

✅ Stop flooding them with exposure and start protecting their nervous system
✅ Prioritise calm connection over correction; this is about trust, not control
✅ Reward emotional regulation, not just obedience
✅ Set them up for success with space, structure and safety

This stage is temporary - but how you handle it can shape your dog’s future. And remember, you’re really not failing… Their brain’s just under construction! 🧠🐾
