🎃 October Hazards to Watch For! 🎃
Autumn brings lots of fun! But it also brings lots of hazards🍂
Here’s a list of common autumn hazards to be aware of:
🍫 Chocolate & Halloween Treats
Chocolate, sweets, and gum can all be toxic — especially those containing xylitol. Keep all Halloween treats sealed and stored well out of paw’s reach. Training opportunity: practice “leave it” with wrapped sweets and distractions during the season! 🎃
🌰 Conkers & Acorns
Fun to chase, but dangerous to chew or swallow. They can cause choking, gut blockages, and stomach upset. Acorns also contain tannins, which are toxic in higher amounts. Stay alert on leaf-covered paths - they blend in!🍂
🍄 Mushrooms & Fungi
Hard to identify and often toxic. Some cause mild digestive upset, others can be fatal. Best rule: if in doubt, keep out. 🚫🍄
🕯️ Candles, Decorations & Costumes
Flames, cords, and plastic decorations can all pose risks. Avoid loose or hanging décor within tail or leash range. If your assistance dog wears gear or a costume for awareness events, ensure it doesn’t restrict movement or cause overheating. 🎃🔥
🧼 Antifreeze & De-Icers (Ethylene Glycol)
Even a few drops can be fatal. Keep dogs away from garages, driveways, or puddles near cars. If you suspect exposure, seek vet help immediately 🚗💧(this also applies if you’re getting out snow globes extra early!)
🍁 Leaf Piles
They look harmless but can hide mold, bacteria, ticks, or sharp debris. Discourage sniffing or rolling through large piles🍂🐾
💡 Shorter Days = Lower Visibility
Dark mornings and evenings mean dogs (and handlers) are harder to spot. Reflective gear and clip-on lights help keep teams visible and safe during night walks or training sessions. 🌙✨
