Walk Spotlight – Twywell Hills & Dales Nature Reserve

If you're looking for somewhere a little different, Twywell Hills & Dales is well worth a visit.

This former quarry has been transformed into a stunning nature reserve, offering a fantastic mix of woodland, open grassland and winding trails. There are plenty of opportunities for dogs to sniff, explore and experience a variety of natural environments.

The changing terrain keeps every walk interesting, while the shaded woodland sections make it a great option throughout the warmer months.

As always, please be mindful of local wildlife and livestock. Keep dogs under control where requested so everyone can enjoy this beautiful reserve.

Socialisation is one of the most misunderstood words in dog training.

Many people think it means meeting as many dogs and people as possible. In reality, good socialisation is about teaching your dog how to exist calmly in the world around them.

That includes livestock, wildlife, traffic, cyclists, farm machinery, children playing, unusual surfaces, loud noises and everything else they might encounter in everyday life.

The goal isn't for your dog to interact with everything they see. The goal is for them to remain calm, confident and neutral around it.

A dog that can quietly observe a field of cows, watch sheep in the distance or pass distractions without feeling the need to react is demonstrating excellent social skills.

Socialisation isn't about saying hello to everything.

It's about being comfortable around anything.

The answer is always yes.

Some dogs are motivated by toys, some by food, and some just love working with their person. That look says it all, ready to learn, ready to engage, and ready for whatever comes next.

The best training sessions don't have to be long. A few minutes of focus, clear communication and success can make a huge difference to your dog's confidence and behaviour.

When the weather turns, many owners feel guilty about cutting a walk short or skipping it altogether.

The truth is that physical exercise is only one piece of the puzzle.

A few minutes of problem-solving, sniffing, training or structured play can often leave your dog more satisfied than another mile of walking.

Some of my favourites are:
Structured tug and retrieve games
Towel treasure hunts
Scatter feeding Practising life skills such as settle and place

Remember, enrichment doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. Often the best activities use things you already have around the house.

A mentally fulfilled dog is often a much calmer dog.

This week we're celebrating one of our golden oldies, Daisy.

Daisy has absolutely no interest in keeping up with the youngsters, chasing tennis balls or proving herself to anyone. She's earned the right to do things her way.

Her idea of a perfect walk is taking her time, following interesting smells and exploring at a pace that suits her. No rush. No drama. Just enjoying the adventure.

One thing I love about senior dogs is that they remind us that walks aren't measured in miles covered or balls retrieved. Sometimes the best walks are simply about getting out, enjoying the fresh air and taking in the world around you.

Every repetition teaches your dog that the first cue wasn't important.

Instead, give the cue once and give your dog time to think. If they don't understand, help them succeed with a lure or make the task easier.

Training isn't about saying commands louder or more often.

It's about making your communication clear enough that your dog understands the first time.

One cue. One meaning.
