Most people don't realise they're accidentally teaching their dog to ignore them.

If every cue is repeated three, four or five times, your dog learns that the first few don't really matter.

"stay... stay... stay... STAY!"

"Sit... sit... sit..."

Over time, the cue loses value because the dog expects it to be repeated.

A better approach is to give the cue once, pause, and then help your dog make the correct choice. Clear communication is easier for your dog to understand and leads to much more reliable behaviour.

The goal isn't louder or more frequent commands.

It's making the first one count.

A quiet moment by the backwater, ears up, nose working and not a care in the world.

Sometimes the best part of the walk is simply slowing down and watching the world go by.

DOG OF THE WEEK – WILLOW

I've worked with Willow since she was a puppy, and she's grown into everything you'd expect from a classic Labrador.

Always happy. Always ready to go. Always turns up with the same enthusiasm whether it's raining, sunny, muddy or somewhere in between.

She's the definition of happy-go-lucky lab energy — a ball obsessed, bum-slap loving bundle of enthusiasm who makes every walk a little brighter.

Watching dogs grow from puppies into confident adults is one of the most rewarding parts of the job, and Willow has been an absolute pleasure every step of the way.

Frozen Kongs are one of the easiest ways to keep dogs cool, calm and mentally stimulated during hot weather

They’re also a really simple way to add real food toppers into your dog’s regular diet without needing to fully swap feeding styles.

A good target for most dogs is the 90/10 split:
90% balanced main diet
10% fresh food and toppers

This batch was layered with:
Sardines
Carrots
Frozen blueberries
Wet dog food

Pack it tightly layer by layer, compact it properly and freeze overnight for a longer lasting enrichment challenge.

Our boys get one Kong every day and it’s become part of their normal routine; calmer dogs, mental stimulation and a great way to slow them down during the heat

A beautiful historic fenland nature reserve and a brilliant chance to see how the fens once looked

This route offers a really nice mix of nature, shaded sections and longer paths, making it a great option for calmer summer walks while avoiding busier areas.

Loads for dogs to sniff and explore without needing to rush from point to point.

Please remember to follow all local signage and keep dogs on lead where required during nesting season to help protect local wildlife

A lot of leash frustration starts at our end of the lead.

The second we tense up, tighten the lead or start anticipating problems… our dogs feel it.

Pressure creates more pressure.
Tension creates more tension.

Calm guidance, awareness and clear communication will always get you further than force ever will.

Hot weather changes everything for dogs.

What would normally be a simple walk can quickly become dangerous in the heat.

Shorter walks, shaded routes, water breaks and knowing when to stay home are all part of responsible ownership.

Dogs will keep going long after they should.
It’s our job to make the safe decisions for them

Hot weather isn’t worth the risk.

Dogs don’t cope with heat the way we do and heatstroke can happen far quicker than people realise.

Always carry water.
Use shaded routes.
Take breaks.
Watch for heavy panting, slowing down or struggling to settle.

And remember:

“If in doubt, don’t go out.”

Missing one walk is far safer than risking your dog’s health
