🟢 Post-Hibernation Party. Last post!

🐢 Some Of The Beautiful Tortoises

This was a great chance to see some absolutely stunning tortoises up close. These animals are all so individual with their own little personalities. It is such a privilege to provide care to them! Seeing them all active, alert and thriving is what it’s all about!

🎈Events like this are such a great reminder of how important proper care, monitoring and expert guidance are for hibernation and in general. It's always such a pleasure to see the tortoise keeping community get together and chat!

👏A huge thank you again to the team of nurses and the owners of the tortoises for making this event happen!

The next hibernation party will be on Saturday 22nd August so let us know if you want to book a place for your little shelled beastie!

Thank you to Petrock ‘n’ Roll for help with social media
Thanks to Midsummer Veterinary Group for help with event.

A closer look - What happens during a tortoise health check during the tortoise party? 🐢

There is a lot going on behind the scenes. The hibernation party involves veterinary students, veterinary nurses and vets all working together to get the data needed. This couldn't happen without some fantastic students and nurses helping! 👇

🔍 Physical examination
Checking body condition, shell quality, eyes, limbs and overall responsiveness. We also assess shell quality as well as level of pyramiding. We check gender and check species.

💉 diagnostics
We use a tool called an endoscope to assess the mouth in a less stressful way. This allows use to look at the colour, the cloana and the epiglottis. We also use ultrasound to assess follicles (the reproductive system) as well as obvious issues in the bladder and kidneys.

🧪 Parasite screening
Samples are analysed under the microscope to detect parasites such as pinworms and other common gastrointestinal organisms. We do a count (using a mcmasters slide) so we can assess what the pinworm burden is. This can then inform treatment

From imaging to hands-on assessment, everything is aimed at building a complete picture of the tortoise’s health. What’s important is that many issues can be caught early before there are outward signs.

That’s why post-hibernation checks are so valuable. They give your tortoise the best possible start to the year.

A big thank you to the owners for allowing us to share these images

A brilliant day at our Tortoise Post-Hibernation Party!

😃 Last week we welcomed tortoise keepers to our post hibernation event, bringing together education, hands on health checks, and a chance to connect with others who share the same passion.

🙌🏼 From in-depth discussions on post hibernation care to full veterinary examinations, it was all about making sure these amazing animals are off to the best possible start for the years.

🩺 A huge part of the day was being able to assess tortoises up close - checking condition, hydration, weight and overall health. It’s always rewarding to work directly with owners and provide reassurance (or catch any concerns early).
We also had

🌿 Dietary guidance with real plant examples, taken from my garden!

💬 Open discussions and Q&A with keepers

Thank you to everyone who attended and trusted us with their tortoises, it’s what these events are all about.

Sending some super congratulations to Liam and Mark for running this.

There is not enough avian teaching available in the UK and europe so it is really amazing to see Avian, Wildlife and Exotic CPD step up to the plate!

Wishing them luck with their orthopedic CPD later on in the year! Invertivet is planning on running another avian Celioscopy course in September!

Exciting times!
