Hot cross buns are an Easter staple, but did you know that they can be incredibly dangerous for our pets?🐥

Grapes and their dried fruits can be toxic to dogs and cats, and ingestion of a small amount can be enough to cause kidney damage. It is not fully understood how these foods cause poisoning, and there is no correlation between the amount eaten and the likelihood of an animal developing complications.

This means that even a small amount can be enough to cause serious kidney impairment in susceptible animals. Signs of toxicity include:

- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Abnormal drinking or urination
- Weakness and lethargy

If your pet ingests a hot cross bun, we recommend seeking veterinary advice as soon as possible.

Thinking about going out and cleaning your patio this weekend?

We receive a lot of enquiries at this time of year regarding pets who have been exposed to benzalkonium chloride, a chemical found in patio cleaners. Exposure most commonly occurs when the product is applied to a patio and the pet proceeds to walk across the surface before it is dry. Grooming and licking the feet then transfers the chemical to the pet's mouth.
Benzalkonium chloride can cause severe irritation and ulceration to the skin, pads of the feet, tongue and mouth. The extent of this injury is often not apparent until several hours later.

Always make sure any surface is thoroughly dry after cleaning before allowing pets to have access to the area. If your pet does get any disinfectant or patio cleaner on their feet/skin, wash it off immediately. If you notice any of the following signs, contact your vet:

⚠️Drooling
⚠️Burns/ulcers in the mouth or on the feet/skin
⚠️Pawing at the mouth
⚠️Loss of appetite
⚠️Lethargy
⚠️Lameness

It's important to keep an eye out for what your dog is investigating and possibly ingesting.

Some spring flowers and bulbs to be cautious of are:

Its important to know that not only eating plants can cause a problem, but even drinking water from a vase could be just as dangerous.
