Oscar recently came to see our Vets Now Manchester Hospital with ongoing bleeding and complications following a previous urethrostomy, a surgery he had to help relieve blockages caused by painful bladder stones.

After a thorough examination, our vets discovered that Oscar was anaemic and had necrotic (dead) tissue, putting him at serious risk of infection.

Our surgical team acted quickly, performing a scrotal ablation to remove the damaged tissue, and a urethrostomy revision to ensure urine could flow properly and safely.

Oscar is now recovering well with lots of TLC, pain relief, and monitoring from both our team and his loving owners 🐶

Fungi (like wild mushrooms) are dangerous to dogs because many varieties contain toxins that can cause serious harm if ingested. Since it’s challenging to determine which types are safe, we recommend treating any ingestion of wild mushrooms as potentially harmful. 🍄

If your pup does eat one, contact your vet immediately or if out of hours, your nearest Vets Now clinic, so they can provide the right care. ❤️

Brave girl Bungle recently became a hero at our Vets Now Manchester Hospital, where she saved the life of her friend Flippen, an ICU patient who was in urgent need of a blood transfusion. Thanks to Bungle’s life-saving donation, Flippen was given a second chance. ❤️

We’re incredibly proud of Bungle, and we’re thrilled to share that Flippen is now home and well on the road to recovery. 🐱🥰

While acorns and conkers are a seasonal snack for squirrels, they can be toxic to dogs.

Ingesting them may lead to serious health issues, including vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, abdominal pain, lethargy and in some cases, dangerous intestinal blockages.

Many pet owners don’t realise the risks, especially during their Autumn walks. To keep your dog safe it is important to:

🍂 Supervise them closely outdoors
🍂Never encourage them to play with or fetch acorns or conkers

The lovely Maja was recently brought to our Vets Now Manchester Hospital showing concerning signs of acute lethargy, breathing difficulties, and problems with her balance.

Once admitted to our hospital, our team observed that Maja was experiencing tremors and seizures, and further examination unfortunately revealed fluid around her lungs.

Following thorough investigations, Maja was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a condition that was once considered a terminal diagnosis. Thankfully, advancements in FIP research and treatment have revolutionised the outlook for affected cats.

Over the following days, Maja responded remarkably well. Her appetite returned, she regained independent mobility, and remained seizure-free throughout her recovery.

We were thrilled to discharge Maja feeling stronger, brighter, and back to her loving self. She’s now continuing her recovery at home with her devoted family who generously brought in a cake to thank our amazing team. 🐱❤️

We're so proud of Maja and grateful to have played a part in her journey to recovery. 🥰

Leo, a six-year-old Golden Retriever, had only taken a few bites of his dinner when he became restless and started yelping. His owner, Mathew, instantly knew something was wrong. When he felt Leo’s belly, he discovered a hard mass, a telltale sign of bloat, or GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus), a condition that can kill dogs within hours. 😢

Mathew rushed Leo to the emergency vet at Vets Now Gateshead, where scans confirmed GDV. Our vet, Conrad, tried to manually reverse the twisted stomach, but surgery was the only option. The operation saved Leo’s life but his spleen was so badly damaged it had to be removed.

Just hours later, as Leo was being prepped for discharge, he began to haemorrhage. A second emergency operation revealed that his liver was oozing blood. To make matters worse, the pet blood bank was closed. That’s when Mathew suggested their younger retriever, Gamble, as a donor. Miraculously, he was a match and calmly gave blood on the spot, saving his brother’s life. 🌟

But Leo wasn’t out of the woods yet. He began to bleed again the next day. Then came the final miracle: a last-minute delivery of rare platelets from Pet Blood Bank UK . It worked and Leo amazingly began to recover! ❤️

Now home and healing, Leo’s story is a powerful reminder that bloat in dogs is an extremely serious, life-threatening condition which requires urgent veterinary treatment. Poor Ralph came into our Preston clinic after 24 hours of vomiting, diarrhoea, and just not being himself. 🤒

Our team discovered he was suffering from Acute Haemorrhagic Diarrhoea Syndrome (AHDS) - a severe, potentially life-threatening condition. He was very unwell on arrival, so we acted fast with fluid therapy, pain relief, and Fresh Frozen Plasma (a blood donation from Pet Blood Bank UK) to stabilise him.

After a few nights in our care, Ralph was back on his paws and able to return home to his loving family. 💙

AHDS can be extremely serious. Click here to learn more and familiarise yourself with the signs: https://bit.ly/3iQjMR7
