Taking a long-term approach is paying off for Lincolnshire grower Ben Jackson.

Despite oilseed r**e looking set to be his most profitable crop this year, Ben isn't rushing to increase acreage. Instead, he's sticking to the principles that have delivered success year after year: wider rotations, careful field selection, drilling to conditions rather than dates, and making the most of hybrid vigour.

Growing LG Attica, LG Adapt and LG Avenger, Ben achieved an impressive average yield of 4.5t/ha while maintaining a sustainable approach to OSR production.

His experience shows that with the right genetics and management, oilseed r**e can still play a valuable role in a profitable arable rotation.

Dorset grower Tom Matthews of Marston Agriculture has seen excellent results from his LG Oilseed R**e crops this season, achieving an average yield of 4.75 t/ha across Ambassador and LG Armada, with his best Ambassador field reaching 5.39 t/ha.

Tom has been particularly impressed by Ambassador's pod shatter resistance and the consistent performance he has come to expect from LG varieties. With results like these, he's confident about putting LG OSR back in the ground next season.

As one of the earliest harvests on record wraps up across the UK, growers turning their attention to oilseed r**e drilling are being urged to hold their nerve and wait for moisture, rather than be guided by the calendar.

Waiting for the right conditions has been borne out for Rutland grower Sarah Bell, whose 17-hectare crop of LG Armada has delivered exceptional results after being drilled into a firm, moist seedbed last August after timely rain in late July into early August — proof, she says, of what a modern hybrid can achieve when conditions are favourable from drilling right through to harvest.
