Not everyone is aware of the fact that dog grooming is an unregulated industry. (I ask myself "why" time and time again). IT SHOULD BE REGULATED.
There is no need for formal qualifications, licenses etc which makes it very easy for people to buy some equipment and start dog grooming.
This hosts a whole load of problems. The equipment we use is specialised and very sharp. It requires proper in person training to enable us to use equipment safely to prevent injury. Obviously there is always a risk if you have a dog that doesn't like being groomed or is fidgety but by being trained this massively reduces the risks.
Our equipment requires regular maintenance which is something we are taught when training to be a groomer alongside animal health and welfare, contamination and infection control.
Using equipment that is damaged can cause serious injury to a dog.
Qualifications cost thousands of pounds as does buying and maintaining equipment alongside insurance.
Before taking your dog to a groomer ask what qualifications they hold! Ask if there insured! Ask if you want to see pictures of previous grooms carried out! There are some fabulous groomers out there who have put a lot of time, effort and money into training. Be aware good groomers are busy and have a lot of clients so you may have to wait a week or even a month for availability.
Remember price isn't everything. The reason good groomers charge more is because of all of the above. This isn't just a job its a passion. The money we charge isn't all profit, it goes into buying good quality shampoos, conditioners, cologne spray, new equipment, scissor sharpening etc (the list goes on)
I'm not writing this to cause any upset but because there are people negatively impacting our industry its best to know the facts, the questions to ask and have your precious fur babies cared for by people who are qualified and capable of doing so.
I have put so much time and effort in with numerous dogs that are new to Rural Pawfection who were scared of dryers, noises, etc and I ask myself why? Grooming should be a positive, enjoyable experience not something they need to be scared of.
I am a consent groomer and that will never change. If it takes an extra 10 minutes of playtime in between being groomed then so be it.
So please do your research and don't always look at the price tag.
