🌱 Beware of Grass Seeds This Summer! 🌱

As the weather warms up and our pets spend more time outdoors, grass seeds can pose a serious hidden danger to dogs and cats.

👉 Grass seeds (also called awns or foxtails) can easily get trapped in:

Ears 👂

Paws 🐾 (between the toes)

Eyes 👀

Nose 👃

Fur & skin

Because of their arrow-like shape, they can burrow deeper into the body and may cause:
⚠️ Pain & irritation
⚠️ Infections & abscesses
⚠️ Foreign bodies requiring surgery

What to watch for:
🐶 Shaking head or scratching ears
🐶 Licking/chewing paws
🐶 Red, swollen eyes
🐶 Sneezing or nasal discharge
🐶 Sudden limping

✨ Top tip: After every walk, give your pet a quick check over—especially paws, ears, and coat. The sooner you find and remove a grass seed, the better.

Summer heat can be tough on our furry friends! Here are some tips to keep your dog safe and cool when temperatures rise:

As temperatures rise, so do the risks for our furry friends! 🌡️☀️

Walking your dog in high heat can be dangerous—even deadly. Pavement can get up to 60°C on a 30°C day. That’s hot enough to burn paws in seconds!

🔴 Signs of heatstroke in dogs include:

Excessive panting or drooling

Lethargy or confusion

Vomiting or diarrhoea

Bright red gums or tongue

🐶🔥 Tips to keep your dog safe:

✅ Walk early in the morning or after sunset
✅ Always test the pavement with the back of your hand (7-second rule)
✅ Bring water for both of you
✅ Keep walks short and seek shade

Hello everyone! My name is Tony and I'm proud to be part of the brilliant team here at Luca Vets. I qualified in 2005 and have been working in UK since 2007. I knew since my very early days I wanted to become a vet, so for me, being a veterinary surgeon is more of a calling than a profession or a job. I have a post graduate certificate in Advanced Surgery that enables me to take on more complex and complicated surgical procedures and currently studying for my second post graduate certificate in Oncology, thus realising a life long dream of mine. My purpose here is to listen to your concerns about your beloved four legged family members and do my absolute best to put your mind at ease and help out, be it an annual booster or a lifelong ailment.
My family and my work occupy most part of my life. I enjoy travelling and visiting sites of historical significance, a passion I share with my wife Jen, spending time with our children, be it a lazy day in or an active day out with our dogs....I am also a self proclaimed cigar aficionado, an avid custom motorbike rider, an unfortunately quite rusty, self defense instructor and an equally rusty deep sea diver...
