If you’re getting this in the park… 🌳

And you’re getting this at home 🏠

Guess where we’re going to start our training? 🙃

Our indoor sessions are SO important for outdoor training. If there is a lot “going wrong” indoors we will often spend an entire session going through that first! There is no way a dog 🐶 will listen to you outside if he’s already guarding the home and practicing anti social behaviour.

Root causes are our first stop! 🛑

Is Your Dog a Vegan? 🌱 🥕 🥦

(Rather a controversial subject I know!!)

I’m not a nutritionist however I do find animal information fascinating. This is the information from three vets replies to someone who raised their golden retriever puppy on vegetables and was concerned with a recent health issue (panting and drooling)

If your dog IS vegan these are the checks you should be getting on your dog and some information around the subject.

“Ask your vet to run a taurine (and if possible, carnitine) blood test — these aren’t always included in standard panels, and they’re key for heart health on vegan diets.

Consider a cardiac ultrasound every 6 months(echocardiogram) from a vet cardiologist — it’s the best way to rule out early DCM, especially for Golden Retrievers.

(The panting and hypersalivation might be just excitement, but could also point to GI discomfort or subtle heart issues — best to monitor and log when it happens.)

As a cardiology vet: Yes, with this history of feeding this is concerning.

Meaning a normal blood work doesn’t mean the food is balanced. You would need monthly biopsies of myocardial tissue etc to know that for sure so we often only see the issues when they’re already causing major problems.
A vegan diet is not adequate, ever, and has no benefits, only huge risks.

I would be definitely concerned for underlying nutritional DCM and he needs a full cardiology workup meaning echocardiography AND Holter for at least 24h. Note that a normal cardiac ultrasound does NOT rule out DCM, a lot of them only have (possibly fatal) arrhythmias.

I want to also add, since you changed him to this diet at a very young age, orthopedic issues (to which Goldens are already very prone) could also definitely be a reason for not doing well. A vegan diet as already mentioned is not adequate for an adult dog but it’s definitely very inappropriate for a growing large breed puppy. I would not be surprised if eg calcium/phosphorus ratios were very off and causing issues there as well

Please also check his ionised calcium- normal calcium on bloods isn’t enough”

Part of being a wild dog (Well, European Village Dog) is that you blend naturally into your environment! (This is some dried mud).

High intelligence, energy and fear of new things is also part of the wild make up. Not so useful in the domestic environment unfortunately!

(She can also get lost in autumn leaves 🍁 )

(Just to stay on topic 😂)

How I trained Flicker to walk with my new mobility scooter since being diagnosed with ME/CFS and fibro. Perks of being a dog trainer when you've got a chronic disability!

It is so HOT 🥵!!!! We’re having to move, cancel and start at 9am during this heatwave.

Luckily we only get about 7 days a year all in different months so it’s not exactly life changing…. 🙃

On a serious note please be careful today and tomorrow- those afternoons are absolutely viscous. Personally I’ve been carrying frozen peas 🫛 on my chest just to survive it!

Frozen treats and paddling pools 💧 are where it’s at.

Sorry I’m not posting much, my illness is extremely dibilating but I did get some video of training Flicker back in March, with my new mobility scooter (as I can now barely walk!) she’s doing excellent! It’s made life easier and she can still enjoy walks almost every day again.

Thanks so much Colin ❤️ we really appreciate your lovely review!!

Be warned!! 🚩🚩

This figure originates from a 2012 study published in the journal Science of the Total Environment by researchers from Tufts University. The study found that:

Dogs exposed to lawn pesticides—particularly 2,4-D herbicides—had a 70% higher risk of developing canine malignant lymphoma (CML), a type of cancer affecting the immune system.

Saw this fantastic idea as alternative to a chewy stick. Healthy, low in cal, cheap and additive free!!

Incorporating this, a couple a day, is very easy to add into your enrichment program ❤️ particularly as the weather warms up ☀️
