Vet Nurse Awareness Month ๐Ÿพ

This month, weโ€™re celebrating Veterinary Nurses and the vital role they play in caring for our patients.

From monitoring anaesthetics and caring for inpatients, to running lab tests, assisting in surgery, placing IVs and taking blood samples, supporting emergency cases, and educating owners โ€” their skills are used every single day. ๐Ÿ’™

They are patient advocates, comfort providers, problem-solvers, and an essential part of every veterinary team.

Vet Nurse Awareness Month is a chance to recognise the dedication, knowledge, and compassion RVNs bring to both patients and their families.

Thank you to all the RVNs for everything you do.

Do you spot anyone you recognise ? ๐Ÿ’™

A few weeks ago we had 2 fun-filled evenings with Lanark Beaver Scouts โ€œColony Bโ€ ๐Ÿฆซโœจ and later in the week with 1st Lanark Boys Brigade joining us at the Lanark practice ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฅ

Not only did they get a valuable insight into the world of veterinary and animal care ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ, they also had the opportunity to become mini vets and nurses themselves with an array of hands-on activities! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ’‰ Definitely some future vets and nurses in the making โญ๏ธ

The star of the show had to be Pamโ€™s wee dog Tosh ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’› who had the BEST time meeting all the little people and getting lots (and lots!!) of treats ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿพ

Thank you so much for visiting CVG; we had a pawsome time with you all! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜Š

โš ๏ธ HEATSTROKE IN DOGS โ€“ PLEASE READ โš ๏ธ

With temperatures in Scotland reaching 24ยฐC this week, we want to raise awareness about the very real dangers of heatstroke in pets.

Meet handsome Chester, who was treated yesterday as an emergency after suffering severe heatstroke. His temperature reached 40ยฐC; dangerously high for a dog. Normal temperatures range from 37.5ยฐCโ€“39.2ยฐC.

Chester arrived struggling to breathe, with grey mucous membranes indicating critically poor oxygenation. He required emergency treatment including active cooling, oxygen therapy and intubation.

Thankfully, after around an hour of intensive care, medication and active cooling, Chester began to improve. Seeing his colour return after oxygen support was a huge relief for everyone involved. His temperature returned to normal and he was monitored closely overnight in hospital. However, the outcome could very easily have been tragic.

Heatstroke can happen suddenly and is a life-threatening emergency.

๐Ÿพ Signs of heatstroke include:
Excessive panting
Difficulty breathing
Lethargy or collapse
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Drooling
Bright red, pale or grey gums
Weakness or confusion

โ„๏ธ If you suspect heatstroke:
Move your dog to a cool, shaded area immediately
Pour cool (not ice-cold) water over their body and coat
Use cool, wet towels UNDER the patient, not over them
Place wrapped ice packs beneath the body if available
Offer small amounts of cool water
Contact your vet immediately

โš ๏ธ Important:
Avoid placing soaked towels over your dog, as this can trap heat and reduce effective cooling. Continuous monitoring is essential, as overcooling can also be dangerous.

Please remember:
๐Ÿถ Never leave dogs in cars
๐Ÿถ Avoid walks during the hottest parts of the day
๐Ÿถ Take extra care with brachycephalic breeds, older dogs, overweight pets and those with underlying health conditions

If in doubt, seek veterinary advice immediately. Heatstroke can become fatal within minutes.

Hot weather is hitting hard this week โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿพ Before every walk, remember the 5-second rule: place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If itโ€™s too hot for you, itโ€™s too hot for your dogโ€™s paws.

Skip midday walks, stick to early mornings or late evenings, and never leave pets in parked cars. Stay safe and keep those paws protected โค๏ธ๐Ÿถ
