๐Ÿ’š Sometimes the smallest moments leave the biggest impression. ๐Ÿพ

When people think of wildlife, they often picture the world's biggest and most famous animals...

But some of the most unforgettable moments come from getting close to the ones you never expected.

๐Ÿพ Meet the Team: Ben

As National Zoo Keeper Week draws to a close, we're finishing our Meet the Team series with someone who has helped make Holmes Chapel Zoo what it is today.

Over the past week we've introduced you to the dedicated people who care for our animals, welcome our visitors and work behind the scenes every day. Today, we're delighted to introduce Ben, our Director, Co-Founder... and self-confessed "Jack of All Trades!"

Ben co-founded Holmes Chapel Zoo alongside his wife, Melissa, and has spent the last 14 years working in zoos. Originally from Lancaster and now living in Haslington, when he's not at the zoo you'll usually find him spending time with his young daughter, exercising or relaxing by playing the piano or viola.

๐Ÿ’š What inspired you to set up Holmes Chapel Zoo?
"I've always loved animals. From joining the RSPB's Young Ornithologists Club as a child to cage diving with great white sharks in South Africa as an adult, wildlife has always been a huge part of my life. Couple that with wanting to run my own business and having a slightly eccentric side... and Holmes Chapel Zoo was probably inevitable!"

๐Ÿฆœ Favourite animal at Holmes Chapel Zoo?
Without hesitation......Milo, our Eclectus Parrot!
"He's been with us for years, has an amazing personality and loves chatting to me around the zoo... although, rather annoyingly, he only seems to do it when no one else is around!"

Which animal are you most like?
"A meerkat, because family and food are both very important to me!" ๐Ÿฆกโค๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜‚ Funniest zoo moment?
"We taught Milo to whisper 'What you doing?' by gently rubbing his beak while saying it to him. One evening we'd covered his aviary so he could sleep, and later I walked into the living room and suddenly heard a quiet whisper saying, 'What you doing?' I couldn't work out where it was coming from and completely panicked, running straight back out of the room... before eventually realising it was Milo!" ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿฆœ

โค๏ธ One last thing...
"Creating Holmes Chapel Zoo has been an incredible journey. Seeing families enjoy time together, watching children discover a love of wildlife and knowing we're helping inspire the next generation to care about conservation makes all the hard work worthwhile." ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿพ Meet the Team: Tori

As part of National Zoo Keeper Week (19โ€“25 July), we're introducing you to the amazing people who care for our incredible animals and help make Holmes Chapel Zoo the special place it is.

Today we're introducing Tori, our Administrator and Front of House superstar! ๐Ÿ’š

Tori first joined Holmes Chapel Zoo as a volunteer last September before becoming a valued member of our Front of House and Administration team. Living in Chester with an impressive collection of dogs, sheep, ponies, goats, rabbits and guinea pigs, working at the zoo really is like a home away from home! When she's not at work, you'll usually find her competing in agility and heelwork to music with her dogs or enjoying a trip to the theatre.

๐Ÿ’š What inspired you to join Holmes Chapel Zoo?
"It seemed like a great opportunity to become part of an exciting new business."

๐Ÿฆœ Favourite animal at Holmes Chapel Zoo?
"Probably the parrots. You can't walk past them without having a conversationโ€ฆ whether that's with words or whistles!"

๐ŸฆŠ Which animal are you most like?
"I'd probably say a fox. They're curious and observant, more sociable with those they're closest to, and fiercely loyal."

๐Ÿ˜‚ Funniest zoo moment?
"I was holding one of our peahens for a keeper and had absolutely no idea she was pooing on me the entire time! It wasn't until I put her down that I looked at my jumper and realised it was completely covered. Luckily I'd brought a spare change of clothesโ€ฆ because peafowl poo smells (and stains!) far worse than you'd imagine!" ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿฆš

โšก Quick Fire

Coffee.

๐ŸŒ™ Early bird or night owl?
Night owl.

๐Ÿ• Guilty pleasure food?

๐Ÿ“ Favourite place?
Anywhere with a beautiful view and somewhere new to explore.

๐ŸŽญ Favourite way to spend a day off?
Spending time with my own animals or enjoying a trip to the theatre.

"Parrots give each of their chicks a unique sound from birth that works just like a name โ€“ and the chicks respond to it for the rest of their lives!"

๐Ÿฆ’ Most amazing animal you've ever seen (outside Holmes Chapel Zoo)?
"It might not sound very unusual, but I could happily spend hours watching the giraffes at Chester Zoo. They fascinate me every single time I visit."

โค๏ธ One last thing...
"Every day at Holmes Chapel Zoo is different. Whether I'm welcoming visitors, helping behind the scenes or chatting to our parrots, there's always something new to learnโ€”and that's one of the things I love most about working here." ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿพ Meet the Team: Nadia

As part of National Zoo Keeper Week (19โ€“25 July), we're introducing you to the amazing people who care for our incredible animals every single day.

Next up is our fantastic Zoo Keeper, Nadia.

Whether she's caring for animals, meeting visitors or sharing fascinating facts about wildlife, Nadia brings plenty of humour to every day at Holmes Chapel Zoo. If you've met her, you'll know she's always ready with a funny story... and usually at her own expense! ๐Ÿ˜„

๐Ÿ’š What made you want to become a zoo keeper?
"I kinda like animals.๐Ÿ˜„ Even from a young age, I'd spend hours catching grasshoppers, millipedes, centipedes and all sorts of creepy crawlies just to watch them. Holidays usually meant spending all my time on the beach searching for crabs, fish and shrimp, or trying to rescue jellyfish that had washed ashore by carrying them back to the sea in a bucket and spade. Honestly... I still love doing exactly the same thing whenever I get the chance!" ๐Ÿ˜‚

Favourite animal at Holmes Chapel Zoo?
"I couldn't possibly pick one... it might upset the others!"
A very diplomatic answer! โค๏ธ

Which animal are you most like?
"According to my daughter... a bat, because I'm spooky." ๐Ÿฆ‡
We're not arguing with that! Especially when Halloween is your favourite time of year... ๐ŸŽƒ

Favourite animal fact?
"Parrots are basically toddlers that have access to weapons."
Anyone who's met one of our parrots might just agree! ๐Ÿฆœ๐Ÿ˜‚

โšก Quick Fire

โ˜• Tea or coffee?
Usually tea... unless I need a caffeine boost!

๐ŸŒ… Early bird or night owl?
Depends what I'm working the day before or after.

๐Ÿช What's your guilty pleasure food?
Cookie pie slices from Sandbach Makers Market.

๐Ÿพ Reptiles or mammals?
I love working with mammals, but I'm fascinated by reptiles.

๐Ÿ‚ Favourite season?
Autumn... because Halloween is the best time of year! ๐ŸŽƒ

๐ŸŠ Dream animal to work with?
Green anacondas, Komodo dragons, binturongs... honestly, I'd love to work with everything!

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Favourite place?
Anywhere near water โ€“ the beach, rivers or lakes.

๐ŸŽต If your life had a theme tune, what would it be?
Entry of the Gladiators (yes... the circus theme tune! ๐Ÿ˜‚)

โค๏ธ One last thing...
"Never turn your back on a kookaburra... especially if their name is Kinta. They have big beaks!" ๐Ÿ˜„
You've been warned!
