Prey drive! And in particular, spaniels! 😃
Artemis has an INSANE prey drive! She is absolutely addicted to chasing squirrels, she's like a tiny ginger crazed maniac in any wooded area 😜
She also has a penchant for rabbits when we're in fields... (this one was already ☠️ don't worry🙈).
Artemis' prey drive kicked in literally overnight when she was around 20 weeks old. One day she was happily tootling along next to me, the next day she was off like an orange blur in the distance.. and that was it for all our future walks.
BUT... the extensive training we had done together since she was 8 weeks old paid off massively. I can let her enjoy her "crittering" safe in the knowledge that she will do ALL of these vital things:
🐰- always check in with me every 30 seconds or so
🐿️ - come back when I call her using our emergency recall cue.. AND walk next to me until I release her
🦅 - she does not venture out of my eyesight
🦌 - if she does catch/pick up something she will drop it and NOT eat it
All of this can be done with reward based training, absolutely zero need for aversive methods or equipment.
