For a long time, I never really understood just how valuable play could be in dog training.

When I was training Buddy, play wasn’t something that was incorporated into our training plan. At the time, I didn’t question it , I simply didn’t know any different.

But as I’ve continued to learn, develop my skills and work with more dogs, my perspective has completely changed.

Play can be such a powerful way of building engagement, motivation and a stronger relationship with your dog!!!

It’s not about playing for the sake of playing. It’s about understanding what your dog enjoys, what motivates them and how we can use that within training.

Getting a dog to play is now a big part of the training plans I create and honestly, it’s something I wish I’d understood much earlier in my own journey.

What’s one piece of advice I’d give to all puppy owners?

EXPOSE, EXPOSE, EXPOSE. 🐶

Sometimes puppy vaccinations get delayed, whether that’s due to the breeder, the vet or just circumstances outside of your control.

Don’t miss out on these crucial moments.

Your puppy doesn’t need to be walking on the ground to start experiencing the world.

Take them out in your arms, in the car, in a carrier… or apparently, in a mobility scooter basket 🤣

Let them experience different people, places, sounds, environments, traffic and everyday life.

Those early experiences are so crucial!!

Don’t wait for walks to start introducing your puppy to the world.

Meet Bella! 🩷

Our newest Walk & Train recruit 🙌🏻

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be working on helping Bella become the most respectful member of society she can be. 😂

We have a lot to do, but my goodness, she absolutely smashed her first session today🥹

I’m so excited to see what we’re going to achieve🫶🏻

Recall training needs to work in the real world, not just when you’re standing in your garden with nothing going on.

That’s why I like to make recall part of the game. Build engagement, make coming back to you rewarding, and then gradually introduce the distractions your dog is actually going to face.

Because a reliable recall isn’t built by simply repeating “come” louder.

It’s built through repetition, clear communication and making the behaviour worth choosing.

Train for real life, not just the easy moments.

These are all things I’ve genuinely had clients tell me they’ve been told by other dog trainers.

And I’m not saying that management, avoidance, food, harnesses or other tools don’t have a place in training, they absolutely do!!!

What I don’t believe in is putting a permanent ceiling on a dog based on where they are right now.

Your dog might need management. They might always need certain boundaries. They might not achieve every single goal you have for them.

But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work towards giving them more freedom, more confidence and better behaviour in real-life situations.

Every dog is different, which is why I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

We work with the dog in front of us, not a label.

Consistency. Consistency. Consistency. 😂

I think I said the word consistency enough times in this one…

But there’s a reason I keep going on about it.

You can have the best training session in the world, but if that training doesn’t continue once the session is over, you’re going to struggle to get consistent results.

What you work on in training needs to be carried into every single walk, every day. Not just when your trainer is there.

And if your dog goes out with a dog walker, they need to understand what you’re working on and reinforce the same expectations.

Your dog shouldn’t have completely different rules depending on who they’re with.

Training is a team effort. The more consistent everyone is with the communication, expectations and boundaries, the clearer things become for your dog.

So… are you being consistent with your dog?

Because if you’re not giving your dog consistency, how can you expect consistent results?
