🐈 Enrichment for Cats 🐈

Making sure your cat has the correct enrichment is very important. Enrichment aids in mental stimulation and alleviates your cats boredom!

Indoor cats need more enrichment than outdoor cats, this is because outdoor cats tend to spend most of the day outside, hunting & exploring. Indoor cats need this to be simulated in the home for them to express natural behaviours.

Signs of boredom:
- Destructive behaviour
- Meowing with no reason or noisy behaviour
- Acting out, ie. biting ankles
- Having lots of energy at night time

Enrichment Activities 🧶
- Interactive feeders/snuffle mats, these can help your cats meal times last longer as they have to work harder for their food!
- Interactive toys, such as moving birds/mice for your cat to chase.
- Wand toys, these can help provide playtime with your cat!
- Food hide & seek, using old yoghurt pots. Place these pots in corners around the house with some dry food, and allow your cats to hunt for it! This helps them express their natural behaviours.
- Cat Trees/Walls, these are a great way to allow your cat to climb & explore. These are just a few ways to alleviate your cats boredom!

🐶🐾 Part 6 of our Breeds series and this week it’s Chihuahuas 🐶🐾

Click on the link 🔗 in the article below 👇for TeamPawsome at Village Vets quick guide 💪

🐾 10 week breed series: Part 6 - Chihuahuas 🐾

Tiny dog. BIG personality. And often enough confidence for a dog ten times their size. 🐶❤️

Chihuahuas are loyal, intelligent companion dogs who often become fiercely devoted to their favourite people. They enjoy learning, playing games and joining you on adventures, but they are equally happy curled up on a warm lap afterwards.

Although it can be tempting to carry these little pocket rockets everywhere, regular walks help build their confidence, support a healthy weight and allow them to enjoy simply being dogs.

Before welcoming a Chihuahua into your family, there are a few things to understand:

🐾 Early socialisation and consistent training are essential
⚖️ They can gain weight easily, especially after neutering
❤️ They may develop heart problems, including heart murmurs
😮 Collapsing trachea can cause coughing or breathing difficulties
🦵 Slipping kneecaps may cause limping, hopping or skipping
🧠 Some Chihuahuas develop epilepsy and may need long-term medication

Getting a puppy? Look for one raised in a caring home environment, meet both parents where possible and ask about any history of seizures, coughing, collapse or heart disease.

Taking on an adult Chihuahua? A veterinary examination and heart check can help you understand their current health needs.

❓ Why are Re-checks Important? ❓

Recheck's are important as it allows us to ensure that our current treatment plan is working and that we don't need to make any adjustments!

For an example, an ear infection can seem better as after a few days of medication/treatment your pet will feel much better so therefore won't display their original symptoms (scratching, head shaking), however, without using our otoscope equipment to look down the ear canal we cannot ensure that there is no longer residual inflammation or discharge which may require a longer course of treatment. This will hopefully prevent any relapse once treatment is stopped.

Rechecks ensure that we do not have a risk of antimicrobial resistance when using antibiotics as this is a growing concern in both human & veterinary medicine💊

They can also detect other issues that may have gone unoticed at the first consultation🩺

Being on the VIP plan means that we can recheck your pet as many times as we need to hopefully resolve their issue without any additional cost of further consultations!

If you need to book your pet in for a consult or re-check, contact us😊
