🎆 Fireworks season is nearly here... but for many pets, it is anything but a celebration. 🐶🐱🐰

The sudden bangs, flashes and vibrations can be frightening, even for pets who usually seem confident.

The good news is that there are things you can do NOW to make firework nights a little easier. ❤️

Try these simple steps:

🏠 Create a cosy, safe place where your pet can hide
🪟 Close windows and curtains before fireworks begin
📺 Use the TV, radio or calming music to help mask outside noise
🐕 Walk dogs earlier, while it is still light
🐱 Keep cats safely indoors after dark
🚪 Make sure doors, windows and cat flaps are secure
🐾 Let your pet hide if they want to and never force them out
😌 Stay calm and behave as normally as possible

And if your pet becomes extremely frightened, shakes, pants, paces, tries to escape or struggles to settle, please do not wait until Bonfire Night to ask for help.

There may be additional ways we can support them, but planning ahead is much easier than trying to manage severe fear once the fireworks have started.

Keeping check on Yuki's diabetes with a clever tool 👀

Yuki came in for annual senior blood screen a couple of months ago and this is where we noted she had a really high glucose level. After running some further tests, we diagnosed her with diabetes 😮

We now monitor Yuki's glucose levels with a smart little tool called a FreeStyle Libre 🤩 We have to shave a little patch and attach the monitor to the skin. This then connects to Yuki's owners phone and gives continual readings of her levels 📈

We use this to ensure we have got the dosage right for her insulin, as we don't want her levels to drop too low or go too high!

Well done to Yuki and her owners for all their hard work and dedication ❤️

Bonfire night is fast approaching, here are some signs of stress & anxiety to be aware of!

🐾 Wide eyes, ears back, tail lowered/tucked between legs
🐾 Inappropriate toileting
🐾 Change in appetite
🐾 Alerting to every sound with barking
🐾 Panting & drooling
🐾 Destructive behaviour
🐾 Clingy
🐾 Hiding, cowering, trembling
🐾 Attempts to escape or trying to run away
🐾 Pacing & restlessness

Cats🐈‍⬛
🐾 Change in appetite
🐾 Pacing & restlessness
🐾 Sleeping more than usual
🐾 Scratching & destructive behaviour
🐾 Hiding away
🐾 Inappropriate toileting
🐾 Excessive drooling
🐾 Any changes in their normal behaviour can be an indicator of stress

💩 Let's talk about something every pet owner encounters sooner or later... diarrhoea.

It is not glamorous, but knowing when to worry can make a big difference. 🐶🐱

Diarrhoea is a symptom, not a disease, and it can happen for lots of reasons. Sometimes it is as simple as a sudden change of food, too many treats or a bit of sneaky scavenging. Other times, it can be linked to parasites, infections, stress or an underlying health problem.

If your pet is still bright, eating, drinking and not being sick, a mild tummy upset may settle within 24 to 48 hours.

But contact your vet if you notice:

🚩 Diarrhoea lasting longer than 48 hours
🚩 Blood in the poo
🚩 Vomiting as well as diarrhoea
🚩 Your pet refusing food
🚩 Marked tiredness, weakness or seeming very unwell
🚩 Diarrhoea that keeps coming back

Very young, elderly or small pets can become dehydrated more quickly, so it is especially important to keep a close eye on them. ❤️

And prevention matters too. A consistent diet, gradual food changes, sensible treats, regular parasite protection and stopping those bin-raiding adventures can all help keep tummies happier.
