๐พ 10 week breed series: Part 3 - Spaniels ๐พ
Bouncy, bright, affectionate, and always ready for an adventure - Spaniels really do bring a lot of joy to family life ๐ถ๐
They are often sociable, eager to please, and quick to learn, which can make them a lovely choice for many first-time dog owners.
But behind those waggy tails and beautiful floppy ears, there are a few important things to know before welcoming a Spaniel into your home.
Spaniels can be prone to:
๐พ Cruciate ligament problems
๐พ Slipping kneecaps
๐พ Hip and elbow issues
๐พ Arthritis
๐ Inherited eye disease
๐ Ear infections
๐คข Pancreatitis
โค๏ธ Heart disease in some types, especially Cavaliers
They also tend to need plenty of exercise, regular grooming, and a little extra ear care. Those glorious ears are very cute, but they do like to keep us vets busy from time to time.
Thinking of getting a Spaniel, or already sharing your sofa with one?
Our latest breed guide explains what to expect, what health concerns to be aware of, and what questions to ask before bringing one home.
