Equine Cushings

Equine Cushings disease is also known as Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID).

Equine Cushings is an endocrine condition usually affecting older horses. This condition involves the pituitary gland and results in the over production of some hormones especially adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) into the horse's body.

The signs of Cushings can be one or multiple of the following:
1. Long hair coat.
2. Delayed or absence of seasonal coat moult.
3. Dull.
4. Lethargic.
5. Muscle wastage especially topline.
6. Weight loss.
7. Increased thirst and urination.
8. Laminitis.
9. Recurrent infections.
10. Reduced fertility.
11. Delayed wound healing.
These signs can sometimes be mistaken for 'old age'.

How to diagnose the condition?

A diagnosis can be made on clinical signs, history and/or hormone blood tests.

The current recommendation is a resting ACTH blood test or a TRH stimulation test.
ACTH levels vary based on the time of year meaning laboratory reference ranges are adjusted accordingly.

How to manage the condition?
Horses with Cushings can be managed medically but the condition itself is incurable. Peroglide is a dopamine agonist and is licensed for the management of equine Cushings.

Please call the office if you wish to discuss this condition or any other problems with a vet.
