Every year we see a large number of dogs presented to us with heat stroke as soon as the sun comes out. Heat stroke is preventable but often owners don’t’ notice the signs until it is too late.

In Northern Ireland we don’t see the sun often and when we do it’s usually very suddenly there and very suddenly much warmer than it was the day before! We can wear less clothes and cool ourselves down easily, our doggy friends cannot. They have to stay in the same fur coat and can’t choose when or where they are walked.

🐾 Be mindful. 🐾

🌅 Walk your dog early in the morning, before 8am.

🌃 Walk your dog later in the evening, after 8pm.

💦 Take them for a swim rather than a run.

🥵 Avoid hot pavement and road walks. Hot tarmac burns paws!

🚰 Have regular drink stops.

🎾 Keep the walks short and running minimal.

🥵 Signs of heat stroke. 🥵

‼️ Excessive panting.

‼️ Difficulty breathing.

‼️ Excessive drooling.

‼️ Sudden lethargy and incoordination.

‼️ Collapse.

If you think your dog has heat stroke seek veterinary advice immediately.

If you come across a sick, dying or dead wild bird please do not lift or touch it.
