One of my favourite things to see is a dog lying completely flat on its side, especially when it's a naturally intense, high-drive dog.
To most people, it might look like a dog simply having a nap. But for those who understand behaviour, it can mean so much more.
Dogs that are constantly switched on, scanning their environment, and ready for the next thing don't always find it easy to truly relax. When a dog chooses to lie on its side, exposing their body and letting go of tension, it often shows a level of comfort, trust, and emotional security in that moment.
That's why it's so rewarding.
It's not about obedience. It's not about commands. It's about helping a dog feel safe enough to decompress and regulate themselves.
For intense dogs, learning how to relax can be just as important as learning how to work.
Seeing that soft body language, the deep sighs, and the ability to simply be present reminds me that progress isn't always measured in excitement, speed, or performance. Sometimes progress looks like a dog peacefully lying on their side, doing absolutely nothing at all.
And those moments are worth celebrating 🤩🥳
