🩷 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗮 🩷

Last week I had the pleasure of welcoming beautiful 18 month old Cavapoo, Mia, for her very first visit to Little Bear Dog Grooming 🐾

Mia is no stranger to professional grooming salons, but she can be a little nervous and sometimes finds the grooming process overwhelming, so her lovely owner decided to try a one-to-one salon environment to see if it might be a better fit for her.

With particularly tight curls for a Cavapoo, Mia’s coat requires plenty of maintenance both at home and in the salon to keep it healthy, comfortable and free from knots. At her previous groomer, she had recently needed a short-all-over trim after her coat had become a little difficult to manage.

For her first appointment with me, the focus was simply on helping her settle into a new environment and get to know a new groomer, while freshening her up with a bath, blow dry, face and feet trim, sanitary trim, paw pad tidy and nail trim.

I’m delighted to say that Mia did brilliantly. Despite being a naturally sensitive girl, she was polite, gentle and beautifully behaved throughout her appointment, even stopping to offer a little affection along the way 🥰

Mia will now be visiting on a regular 5 week schedule, and over time we’ll be working towards growing her legs out a little longer to create a more balanced overall style.

Welcome to the Little Bear family, Mia. I can’t wait to watch your confidence continue to grow over the coming months! ❤️🐾

❤️ 𝗔𝗿𝘆𝗮 & 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗲 ❤️

This lovely pair of Miniature Schnauzers returned to see me this week for their third visit to Little Bear Dog Grooming 🐾

Since their first visit back in February, Arya and Bertie have settled beautifully into their regular grooming routine and now visit every 8 weeks to keep their coats looking neat, tidy and easy to maintain. Their lovely owner prefers a short, practical trim all over, finished with those unmistakable Schnauzer eyebrows and beards ✨

As always, Bertie took everything in his stride and was wonderfully relaxed and cooperative throughout his appointment.

Arya’s relationship with grooming is a little different, and as with every visit, her comfort and wellbeing remain the priority. She has some ongoing ear issues which can occasionally make her ears and head area a little sensitive, and this was particularly noticeable during this appointment. As a result, we worked carefully within her boundaries, only doing what she felt comfortable with, and keeping the experience as positive as possible.

While grooming isn’t Arya’s favourite activity, she’s such a sweet little soul. The moment she’s back on the floor, she’s full of affection, happily seeking out cuddles, treats and fusses 💕

I’m also delighted to say that Arya and Bertie’s lovely owners have now block booked their appointments for the remainder of the year. This means their preferred days and times are safely reserved in my diary months in advance, taking away the worry of finding appointments when they’re due.

🩵 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗶’𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝘁 🩵

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of welcoming gorgeous Cockapoo Benji back to Little Bear Dog Grooming for his second visit and second haircut 🐾

Some of you may remember Benji from his first visit two months ago, when he came to see me at 7 months old for his very first professional haircut. At the time, I spoke about what a fantastic job his lovely owners had done preparing him for grooming and caring for his coat at home, and it was lovely to see that continue for his second appointment.

Benji was originally due to visit during last week’s heatwave. However, as a young puppy with a later afternoon appointment, we decided it would be safest to postpone his groom until this week when the weather was cooler and more comfortable.

Now 9 months old, Benji arrived happy and relaxed with a waggy tail. His owners have continued to keep his coat beautifully maintained between appointments and, with the warmer weather now upon us, we opted for a shorter summer teddy bear trim - keeping the body shorter while leaving the legs and face a little fuller for that soft, cuddly teddy bear look ✂️

For only his second haircut, Benji did exceptionally well. He was wonderfully behaved throughout his groom and took everything in his stride. He’s just a little sensitive when it comes to having his face groomed, which is perfectly normal for a youngster who is still gaining experience, and he handled it brilliantly.

One of the most rewarding parts of grooming puppies is watching their confidence grow with each visit, and Benji is already making such lovely progress. He’s an absolute pleasure to groom and I’m so pleased to have him as part of the Little Bear family ❤️🐾

🩷 𝗧𝘂𝗹𝗮’𝘀 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 🩷

This week, lovely Tula the Cockapoo was back at Little Bear Dog Grooming for her regular 6 weekly pamper session 🐾

Tula has been visiting me since November last year and always arrives alongside her friend Poppy, with both girls coming to their appointments together as they're owned by family members. It's always such a pleasure to see them both walk through the door.

Now, Tula does have a little quirk that always makes me smile. She likes to make sure everyone knows she's arrived! 📣😅 Her drop-offs are often accompanied by plenty of enthusiastic chatter, but once she realises it's time to get to work, she settles beautifully and is impeccably behaved throughout her groom.

During this visit, Tula enjoyed a thorough bath using a natural conditioning shampoo, helping to leave her coat clean, soft and healthy. She was then carefully blow dried before receiving her full groom, tailored to her owner's preferred style, along with a nail trim and a spritz of finishing fragrance to complete her pamper session ✨

As for Poppy... well, she has a quirk of her own! While Tula likes to announce her arrival, Poppy prefers to save her commentary until the end of her appointment, when she likes to let everyone know that she's finished and quite ready to go home! 🤭 Unfortunately, that meant we didn't quite manage to capture a photograph of Poppy this time around, she has featured on my page previously though, and we'll try again on her next visit.

It's always lovely spending time with these two characters, and I look forward to seeing them both again in a few weeks' time ❤️🐾

🩷 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 🩷

Last week I had the pleasure of welcoming gorgeous Bernese Mountain Dog, Winter, back to Little Bear Dog Grooming for her second visit 🐾

It hardly feels like eight weeks ago that Winter came to see me for her very first professional groom. Since then, she’s grown in confidence and familiarity with the grooming process, and I was so pleased with how beautifully she handled her second appointment.

Just like her first visit, Winter enjoyed a relaxing bath in the specialist spa hydrobath, followed by a thorough blow dry and a full de-shed to remove loose undercoat. With the warmer months now arriving, regular de-shedding appointments can make a huge difference for double coated breeds by helping to remove dead coat that would otherwise become trapped, allowing air to circulate more effectively through the coat while supporting its natural temperature regulation ☀️🌿

For a young dog experiencing only her second ever groom, Winter really was an absolute star. She took every part of the process in her stride and was a pleasure to spend time with from start to finish. It’s always lovely to see dogs return with a little more confidence each time, and Winter is proving exactly why those early positive grooming experiences are so important.

Well done, Winter - I can’t wait to see you again for your next pamper session ❤️🐾

🩵 𝗧𝗼𝗯𝘆’𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 🩵

It’s hard to believe that gorgeous Toby is now almost 9 months old! 🐾

I first met this handsome show-type Cocker Spaniel back in December when he was just 15 weeks old, and he’s been visiting 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 regularly every 4-6 weeks ever since.

Like all puppies, Toby started his grooming journey with a series of puppy grooms, allowing him to gradually become familiar with the sights, sounds and handling involved in professional grooming. From day one, he has taken everything completely in his stride and has been an absolute pleasure to work with.

Toby’s lovely owners travel all the way from Cardiff to visit me, as they were specifically looking for a groomer able to hand-strip his coat when the time was right - and I’m so excited to share that we’ve now reached the beginning of that next stage in his grooming journey ✨

Unlike clipping, 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 involves carefully removing the dead outer coat by hand. For suitable breeds, such as show-type Cocker Spaniels, this helps maintain the correct coat texture, colour and appearance while encouraging healthy coat growth.

The important thing with hand stripping is that it can only be done when the coat is ready. Every dog develops differently, and for Toby, we’re starting to see the first signs of this along his topline (the top of his back) and a little on the top of his head.

During this visit, Toby graduated from puppy grooms to his 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺. Alongside his hydrobath, blow dry, brush out, nail trim and paw pad tidy, we introduced some light scissor work to neaten his feet, leg furnishings and ears, whilst keeping the longer ear length his owners love.

Most excitingly of all, Toby had his very first introduction to hand stripping. As only a small area of coat was ready, we kept things short and positive, and Toby handled it beautifully. He stood calmly throughout, remained completely relaxed and even took time out for a few cuddles along the way 🥹

One of the biggest benefits of introducing puppies to grooming from an early age is that when new elements are added later, they already have the confidence and trust to take it all in their stride - and Toby is proving exactly why those early puppy appointments are so valuable.

I’m incredibly proud of how far this lovely boy has come, and with a bit of luck, when he returns in a few weeks' time, even more of his coat will be ready for us to continue his hand-stripping journey.

🩷 𝗟𝘆𝗿𝗮’𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 🩷

Yesterday I had the pleasure of welcoming beautiful Cockapoo Lyra to 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 for her very first visit 🐾

Lyra was also one of the lucky pups this week whose appointment fell earlier in the day while temperatures were cooler and more comfortable, allowing us to safely go ahead with her groom despite the current heatwave.

Lyra’s lovely family first got in touch with me back in January. Although she already had a regular groomer whom she knew well, they were planning ahead for when her groomer takes maternity leave this year and wanted to find a suitable temporary groomer to care for Lyra during that time.

One thing I always encourage when possible is allowing nervous or uncertain dogs the opportunity to visit the salon before their first groom. So back in April, Lyra popped in for a little meet and greet, giving her owners the chance to ask any questions, while also allowing Lyra to start building some positive associations with both me and the salon environment before any grooming took place.

Yesterday was finally the big day, and I’m so pleased to say that Lyra did exceptionally well. 🥰

With the calm, quiet, one-to-one salon all to herself, we worked at a gentle pace and took things step by step. Although grooming isn’t Lyra’s favourite pastime, she settled beautifully and was an absolute pleasure to spend time with.

Her pamper session included a relaxing bath, a thorough blow dry, a short all-over trim to help keep her coat easy to maintain and reduce the frequency and length of future grooming appointments, a tidy nail trim, a cute rounded muzzle, and a spritz of finishing fragrance to complete her groom.

It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to look after Lyra while her usual groomer enjoys her maternity leave, and I look forward to seeing this sweet girl again soon. Well done Lyra ❤️🐾

☀️ 𝗠𝗶𝗸𝗮 ☀️

Sweet little Mika the Poochon visited 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 yesterday morning for her regular groom, and as always, she was an absolute delight from start to finish 🐾

Mika has been a regular visitor for the last couple of months now, and she truly is the sweetest little girl to groom 🫶🏼

As we’re currently experiencing exceptionally high temperatures here in Caerphilly, a number of appointments have unfortunately had to be rescheduled in order to keep dog safety and welfare the absolute priority.

Thankfully, Mika was one of the lucky pups with an early morning appointment yesterday, meaning we were able to safely go ahead with her groom while temperatures were still cooler and more comfortable.

During warmer weather like this, extra precautions are always taken within the salon to help dogs stay as cool and comfortable as possible. Before Mika’s appointment, I liaised with her lovely owners to check she could travel safely to and from the salon in an air-conditioned car.

Inside the salon, cool bath water was used and absolutely no heat was applied during the drying process. While this can sometimes mean coats don’t dry quite as perfectly straight or polished as they normally would, that is completely okay - because during weather like this, it’s always welfare over aesthetics 💕

☀️ 𝗔 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 ☀️

A huge thank you to everybody who has been so kind and understanding regarding appointment reschedules this week due to the current heatwave 🫶🏼

Whilst every precaution is always taken within the salon to keep dogs cool, safe and comfortable during warmer weather, the temperatures we are currently experiencing are particularly extreme. Because of this, some appointments have been moved to cooler days in order to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of the dogs in my care 🤍

Even short journeys, warm cars and hot pavements can quickly become dangerous for dogs in these temperatures - especially for puppies, senior dogs, flat-faced breeds and thick or double-coated dogs.

Just a gentle reminder that during weather this extreme, it is often safest to skip walks altogether. Missing a walk for a day or two will not harm your dog, but heatstroke absolutely can ☀️

Instead, focus on keeping dogs cool and comfortable at home with:

• Fresh, cool water available at all times 💧
• Fans, cool mats, shaded areas or air conditioning where possible ❄️
• Calm enrichment activities indoors such as sniff games or lick mats 🐾
• Avoiding unnecessary car journeys during peak temperatures 🚗

🐾 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 🐾

It’s an absolute pleasure for 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 to once again support the upcoming charity family day at Cwrt Rawlin this Bank Holiday Sunday ☀️

This year’s event is raising money for 𝗧𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, and I’m so pleased to be able to support such an important cause at my lovely local dog-friendly pub 🫶🏼

Last year, I donated a doggy hamper worth £60 to the raffle - but this year, I’ve gone even bigger and better, with a hamper containing 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 £𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 for one lucky winner! 🐶🎁

The hamper includes lots of lovely goodies such as natural treats from NAW, Arden Grange, LickiMat products, toys, grooming goodies from the salon, and even a cooling mat ready for the warmer weather forecast ☀️🐾 Definitely one worth getting your raffle tickets in for 👀🎟️

I’ll also be joining the lovely Ellie from Paw Express to judge the dog show on the day… which honestly might just be the toughest job ever because every dog is a winner in my eyes 😅🫶🏼
