We are all so glad Riggs is feeling better after his referral to Willows 🥰

Meet Riggs! 👋

Riggs was referred to Will Robinson, our Head of Soft Tissue Surgery, for investigation and management of condition called laryngeal paralysis.

This is an uncommon condition where the nerve supply to part of the voice box is disrupted, making it increasingly hard for the patient to breathe. Riggs presented with the classic signs of laryngeal paralysis and so the decision was made to confirm the diagnosis under a very light plane of anaesthesia.

This showed both sides of Riggs’ larynx were affected, so he was taken to theatre where the left side was held open with two permanent sutures in a procedure known as a ‘laryngeal tieback’. Riggs recovered really well after the surgery and we are pleased to say his breathing is back to normal and he is continuing his recuperation at home. ❤️

Mac came to see us recently to tell us about his sore ear, it was very annoying and causing him to shake his head and rub his ears! ☹️ The vet took some samples to examine under the microscope and found the pesky bacteria responsible for Mac’s discomfort 🦠 A quick single treatment was applied in the consult which means Mac’s owner doesn’t need to apply anything at home - win for everybody! 🤩

Dogs ears are poorly designed which unfortunately means that bacteria and yeast overgrowth is common and will cause great discomfort to our pets 🤕 If you are concerned about head shaking or scratching at ears, call us to make an appointment on 0121 783 2327 and one of our vets will be happy to chat through all of the options! 📞

This handsome chap is Bubbles! 🐱 Bubbles visited vet, Dom for his first health check and vaccinations and what a brave boy he was! ☺️

Vaccinating your cat is an excellent way of protecting them from unwanted viruses! Feline vaccines offer protection against Panleukopenia, Feline Calicivirus and Feline Herpesvirus 🦠 Unlike human forms of flu, cat flu stays with them for life and can cause recurrent flare ups of symptoms.
The earliest your kitten can be vaccinated is 9 weeks of age, if you would like to get your kitten or cat booked in for their vaccinations, please call the surgery on 0121 783 2327 📞

Meet the Team Monday 🌷🐾

Meet Emily! 🌻 Emily is one of our wonderful nurses, and having started here as a trainee in 2018, is a much loved member of the team. She is an animal lover through and through, having herself 4 cats and a dog! 🐈🦮 Emily particularly enjoys inpatient care and is always on hand to give a cuddle to any patients feeling a bit sorry for themselves. She does an excellent job of providing a lot of the out of hours care in the hospital 👩‍⚕️

She is also an avid runner and likes to use the sport as a way to fundraise for charity! Some of you may remember her raising money for Dogs for Good in 2024 by running the London Marathon 🏃‍♀️
This year, she has set herself the challenge of running a half marathon every month of 2025 in order to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, a charity that is very special to the extended Lodge Vets family; they have done so much for a special young boy with congenital heart disease 🫀

She can quite often be seen running locally with her Golden Retriever, Owen, and would be very appreciative of any donations towards her challenge! 🏃‍♀️

Meet Tilly and Lily! 🌸

Tilly had been fostered by one of our lovely clients for 2 months when she was presented to the surgery with distended abdomen and looking very poorly 😢 Though she had been kept inside, she must have gotten pregnant just before being rescued, unbeknownst to her fosterer. She looked ready to give birth but had also become extremely unwell.

Blood tests showed she was dangerously anaemic. We performed an ultrasound showing that tragically some of her kittens were no longer alive but at least one had a heartbeat.

Emergency surgery was performed and a uterine torsion was discovered. This is when half or all of the uterus rotates and gets stuck in a twisted position which compromises its blood supply. A caesarean section was performed, followed by a full ovariohysterectomy.

Amazingly, Tilly pulled through despite the risks along with one of her kittens 🥰 Both have now made full recoveries and continue to go from strength to strength 🤍

Pictured below is brave girl Tilly with baby Lily and then baby Lily all grown up for her vaccinations! 🤩

We would love everyone to meet special boy Loki! He came to us a very poorly puppy, and unfortunately he was confirmed to have contracted parvovirus ☹️

Parvovirus is an awful gastrointestinal virus that kills off the cells of the gut in young dogs. It is highly contagious and unfortunately can cause death even when rapid treatment is given 🦠

Thanks to the quick diagnosis from Vet, Dom, care and dedication from our wonderful nursing team, and the fighting spirit of little Loki, he pulled through and made a brilliant recovery 🥰

Thankfully parvovirus is now much rarer due to good vaccination protocols and luckily Loki had his first vaccination on board which is a contributing factor to his recovery 🤩 Even so, Loki is a stark reminder that vaccination as early as possible (ideally with the breeder) is very important. We have loved seeing Loki thrive and go back to being his cheeky, playful self.

Pictured below is Loki receiving treatment during hospitalisation and then fully recovered at his second vaccination appointment earlier this week! ☺️
