Vancouver's summer heat can turn downtown sidewalks and the seawall into scorching surfaces that can seriously burn your pet's paw pads. Before heading out for that Yaletown walk, press your hand to the pavement for 5 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's definitely too hot for your furry friend's paws.

Protect your pet this summer:
• Walk during cooler morning or evening hours
• Stick to grassy areas when possible
• Consider protective booties for longer walks
• Carry water for both of you
• Watch for signs of overheating: excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy

Your neighbourhood veterinarian is here when you need us. Call (604) 416-4114 to schedule a summer wellness check.

Your cat has attended 43 of your work calls this quarter.

She has contributed nothing to the agenda. She has, however, walked across the keyboard during a screen share, sat directly in front of the camera during a client presentation, and knocked your headset off during what you described as "a critical moment."

HR has been informed. She does not care.

Some dogs love summer.
Some just tolerate it better than others.

Flat-faced breeds, seniors, overweight dogs, and thick-coated dogs can struggle with heat long before owners notice a problem.

A quick errand, a sunny patio, or an afternoon walk can become risky faster than expected during warmer weather.

Knowing what “normal tired” looks like versus overheating matters this time of year.

Planning a BC Ferries trip this summer with your pet?

Before you board, make sure you’re thinking about:
• Car deck heat
• Motion sickness
• Pet-friendly ferry areas
• Choosing cooler sailing times

A little preparation can make travel safer and less stressful for your pet.

Save this before your summer sailing.

And we will be right here on Pacific Street, same as always.

The good news: your dog is healthy and their coat is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do right now.

The bad news: you’re about to find fur in your coffee, on your keyboard, inside your left shoe, and somehow even inside a sealed envelope.

Spring shedding is completely normal for many dogs and cats. If you notice patchy shedding, bald spots, irritated skin, or excessive scratching, it’s worth checking in with your vet.

But if it’s just fur everywhere?
Brush more. Vacuum constantly. Accept your new reality.

You’re doing great.
Your couch is a lost cause.

It is nesting season along False Creek and the Seawall and Vancouver's Canada geese are not playing around.

Areas to be extra aware of right now: David Lam Park, Charleson Park, the False Creek waterfront, and the Seawall between Yaletown and Granville Island.

Keep your dog on a leash and give nesting pairs wide clearance. If a goose is posturing with its neck low and wings spread, it is not bluffing.
