We have a confirmed case of parvovirus in the Truro area.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and deadly virus that affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. It spreads through infected f***s, contaminated surfaces, and can even be carried by shoes and clothing.

Signs you may see :

- Vomiting, often severe

- Bloody, smelly diarrhea

- Lethargy, weakness, "dull" demeanor

- Loss of appetite

- Fever or the opposite: low body temperature

Puppies and dogs with parvo usually look obviously unwell. This can happen quickly.

So how can you protect your pup?

VACCINATE! Make sure your puppy is up to date on vaccines. If you are unsure, check with your family veterinary team. PUPPIES NEED A FULL SERIES OF VACCINES TO BE PROTECTED. Vaccines are extremely effective.. it is rare for a fully vaccinated dog to get sick.

Avoid places like dog parks or pet stores until your pup is FULLY vaccinated.

Disinfect surfaces and wash hands well after handling other dogs. Parvovirus can survive in the environment for months if not disinfected.

Parvovirus can be a fatal disease.
If you suspect your puppy or dog has parvo, do not delay and seek veterinary care IMMEDIATELY—early treatment can save lives.

Help spread the word and keep our furry friends safe!

Parvovirus: How it Happens - Veterinary Partner - VIN

Whether or not parvovirus infection happens depends on the interaction of three things: Host vitality (including immune experience/vaccination status), virulence of the virus (including how many viral particles the host is exposed to), and environmental factors.
