🦔 **FACT vs. FICTION: Porcupine Quills**

A common thing we hear in clinic when handling porcupine quill cases is that cutting the quills will release a gas and ultimately make them easier to remove.

✅ FACT: Porcupine quills do not contain gas, and cutting them does not make them easier to remove. Quills are specially adapted with tiny barbs that help them move through tissue over time - AKA migrate. Once cut, they can also be more difficult to get a good grip on for removal and can encourage migration to occur faster.

We also know that having quills removed can be both painful and stressful for your pet. While it may be tempting to try removing them at home, there can be a greater risk of breaking or leaving quill pieces behind.

FOUND DOG

A sweet older female dog was found around noon today on Harmony Road, just outside Truro.

She appears to be approximately 10 years old and is believed to be a Chihuahua mix.

We’re hoping to reunite her with her family! ❤️

Meet Kato and his VERY happy tail…maybe a little too happy!

Poor Kato had a case of Happy Tail, when an enthusiastic pup wags their tail so hard that they repeatedly injure it against walls, furniture, kennels…basically anything in the way of those big feelings 🥹.

Unfortunately, Kato’s happy tail eventually resulted in him breaking his tail, and the best option was a tail amputation.

Kato is now officially rocking the cutest little tail you ever did see, but we don’t think a shorter tail is going to stop him from wagging! 💕

💙 **Last week was Veterinary Assistant Appreciation Week!** 💙

We wanted to take a moment to recognize our incredible Veterinary Assistant, Jess! As the sole Veterinary Assistant across The TVUC family, Jess is an invaluable part of our team and helps make every shift a little brighter.

With over two years of experience in emergency veterinary medicine, Jess brings a calm, compassionate presence to even the busiest and most challenging days. She's always ready to comfort both our patients and their people—whether that means whispering sweet nothings to a nervous pup, putting Dog TV on for our canine patients, or treating our feline friends to Aquarium TV to help them relax.

A 2022 Eastern College graduate, Jess has truly found her passion in veterinary medicine, and it shows in the care she gives every patient who comes through our doors.

When she's not at the hospital, you'll likely find her outdoors fishing, hiking, or playing softball, usually with her black Lab, Leroy, by her side.

Found Cat – Debert Area

Last night, a young cat was brought to our clinic after being struck by a vehicle. She was found beside the ditch near Debert Elementary School.

She is described as:

* Female (intact)
* Dilute calico
* Approximately 6–8 months old
* Small, under 5 lbs
* No microchip
* Pregnant

Despite every effort, she sadly succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

If you believe this may be your kitty, please contact our clinic so we can help reunite her with you and make arrangements to bring her home. 🤍

A female Golden Retriever was found on Highway 2 near the Commercial Safety College. She is wearing a collar but does not have a microchip.

Summer Reminder from The Hub! 🐾

The Hub is proud to be a dog-friendly shopping centre and we love seeing your furry friends visit us!

As the temperatures rise, we kindly remind all shoppers not to leave their dogs in parked cars, even for a short amount of time. On hot days, car interiors can become dangerously hot in minutes, even if the windows are cracked.

Instead, bring your pup inside to cool off while you shop!
Many of our retailers are happy to welcome well-behaved, leashed dogs.

We’re finally getting some beautiful warm weather - but remember, the heat can also be really tough on our pets.

Every summer we see pets come in overheated and dehydrated, and it can happen much faster than people expect. Even a quick walk, a long car ride, or too much time playing outside can be enough... especially hot days.

A few easy reminders:
💧 Bring water everywhere
🌳 Make sure they’ve got shade and a cool place to rest
🐾 Check the pavement before walks (if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!)
🚗 Never leave pets in the car, even “just for a minute”

If your pet seems extra tired, is panting heavily, drooling a lot, vomiting, or just not acting like themselves, don’t wait to get them checked out.

We want everyone enjoying the sunshine safely this summer 💙
