🚨🐱 Blocked Cats: A Life-Threatening Emergency 🐱🚨

A urinary blockage occurs when a cat's urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body) becomes blocked, preventing them from urinating. This condition is most common in male cats and can quickly become life-threatening.

‼️ Although urinary blockages are a common concern in male cats showing these symptoms, some cats may already have underlying factors that predispose them to developing blockages. ‼️

What can cause a urinary blockage?
• Crystals or stones in the bladder
• Mucus plugs and inflammatory debris
• Urinary tract inflammation
• Stress-related urinary issues
• Narrow urethra (especially in male cats)

Signs and symptoms of a urinary blockage:
• Frequent trips to the litter box with little or no urine produced
• Straining to urinate
• Crying or vocalizing while trying to urinate 😿
• Blood in the urine
• Excessive licking of the ge***al area
• Vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy or hiding
• Painful or enlarged abdomen

Why is a urinary blockage so dangerous?
⚠️ Toxins build up in the body when urine cannot be passed.
⚠️ Severe electrolyte imbalances can develop.
⚠️ Kidney damage can occur.
⚠️ The bladder can rupture.
⚠️ Without treatment, a blockage can become fatal within 24–72 hours.

🚑 A urinary blockage is a medical emergency. If you think your cat may be blocked or is unable to urinate, contact your emergency veterinarian immediately. Early treatment can save your cat's life.

A great deal of thought and care went into creating this room to ensure both pets and their families feel as comfortable, peaceful, and supported as possible during a difficult visit.

Gypsy came in for her very first puppy visit and was an absolute superstar!! 🌟🐾 At only 10 weeks old, she is the most well-behaved girl, sitting pretty and taking her vaccines like a champ! 💉🏆🐕

Gypsy is a girl who is full of love and wants to give all the kisses! 😘🐶💕 She stole all of our hearts the moment she walked through the door. 🐾❤️

🐾☀️ Protect Those Precious Paws This Summer! ☀️🐾

As the warmer weather arrives, it's important to remember that our dogs rely on their paw pads every single day! 🐶❤️

🐾 What do paw pads do?
• Provide traction and help prevent slipping
• Absorb shock and cushion joints when running and walking
• Help dogs navigate different terrains safely
• Provide insulation from hot and cold surfaces

🐾 How can we help protect our dogs paw pads?
• Regularly check paws for cuts, cracks, or injuries
• Keep nails trimmed to support proper foot health
• Use paw balms or moisturizers to prevent dryness and cracking
• Avoid rough, sharp, or extremely hot surfaces
• Rinse paws after walks to remove salt, chemicals, or debris

☀️ Hot Weather Warning! ☀️
With summer temperatures on the rise, hot pavement and sidewalks can quickly burn or damage your dog's paw pads. Even when the air temperature feels comfortable, asphalt and concrete can become dangerously hot.

🐾 How can you tell if the pavement is too hot?
Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand to comfortably stay there, it's too hot for your dog's paws! 🖐️🔥

To keep your pup safe:
• Walk during the cooler morning or evening hours
• Stick to grassy or shaded areas whenever possible
• Bring water along for longer walks
• Watch for signs of discomfort such as limping or frequently lifting their paws

🐶❤️ Taking these extra steps to protect your dog's paws can help prevent painful injuries and contribute to a long, healthy, and active life. A little prevention goes a long way in keeping our four-legged family members happy and comfortable all year long!

Kaylie is a Vet Assistant who loves working with animals big or small, furry or scaled! She loves helping provide the best care possible for every patient who visits us. When she's not at work, you can find her hiking or spending time at the beach with her husband and her beagle, Pickles 🐶. She also enjoys snuggling up on the couch with her dog while watching an 80’s horror movie. 🎬

🐾 Next, we have Kat, our Receptionist!
Kat is the friendly face that greets you when you walk through our doors and is always happy to help answer any questions you may have and make sure you and your pet feel welcome from the moment you walk in.😊 When she's not at the clinic, she enjoys spending time with her family or having a fun game night with friends. 🎲

🐾 Next is Dr. Messina, Owner and Veterinarian of Uptown Animal Clinic!
Dr. Messina opened the clinic in April 2026 and strives to make every visit as relaxing and stress-free as possible for both pets and their owners. 🩺🐾 When she's not at work, she enjoys trying different vegan restaurants, spending time with her two dogs, Kaylee and Royal 🐶🐶, or hosting a fun game night with her husband and friends.
