Never punish the growl 🐾

A growl is information. It tells us the dog is uncomfortable and wants something to stop. It's communication, not disobedience.
Why punishing a growl backfires:
• The fear or discomfort stays
• The warning may disappear
• The next step may be a snap or bite
• The trigger can become even scarier
Common reasons dogs growl: fear or feeling threatened, pain or being handled, guarding food or toys, and being crowded or touched.
What to do instead, in the moment:
1️⃣ Stop and give space
2️⃣ Calmly call the dog away
3️⃣ If appropriate, toss a single piece of food away from the situation to help the dog disengage. It lays the foundations of a safe, effective coping strategy (skip it if the growl is over food or other dogs are close by)
4️⃣ Note what triggered it
5️⃣ Then work on changing how the dog feels about that situation
💡 The lightbulb: a growl is an early warning that lets us step in before things escalate. Change how the dog feels about the situation, and the need to growl fades.
