Let's talk mats!
Mats can be caused by many different factors, from poor hygiene, to getting a little wet, or owners not realizing they are only brushing the surface of the hair and not getting to the skin.
Generally they start off as little snags or knots in the coat, this can happen with almost any length of hair. We can brush these out.
If these little knots and tangles are left, they will start to slowly tighten, causing the mat to get larger and larger.
As a mat grows it starts pulling at the skin of the cat ,it gets so tight it causes pain and starts to tear from the cats skin leaving bruised , painful damaged skin. For these Mats we may have to spot shave, as it's too painful for the cat to be brushed out.
Some cats are so matted they actually feel as if there is no mat because of how hard and large they can get. This is what we call "Pelted ", only shaving can remove this painful condition.
A cat with large mats or pelting will be sensitive to touch the first couple days after removal, but they will be great full and will start to heal.
A matted cat will not have a picture perfect haircut due to the way the hair is pulling out but the hair will grow back and the cat will be happier.
Picture is of a Pelted cat, you can see the red irritated skin, the places where the hair was pulling out.
If your cat has mats of any kind bring them to us and we will get them on the road to feeling better the gentlest way possible.
