Kindness is taking them in. Responsibility is keeping them safe.

Taking in a cat who needs to be rehomed is an incredibly kind thing to do, but it also needs to be done carefully.

Even when a cat looks healthy, there can still be risks you cannot see right away.
A rehomed cat may be stressed, unvaccinated, carrying parasites, or have illnesses that could spread to other cats in the home. Stress alone can also bring out symptoms that were not obvious before.

There is also a very real escape risk. A cat in a new home does not yet understand where they are. They may panic, hide, run toward a door, or try to get back to the place they knew before. If they get outside too soon, they may not know how to find their way back.

This is why it is so important to keep a new cat safely separated at first, use separate food bowls and litter boxes, wash your hands between cats, and arrange a vet check as soon as possible. Doors and windows should be extra secure, and introductions should be slow and calm.

Opening your home to a cat in need is a beautiful act of kindness, but it also comes with responsibility. Careful rehoming protects the new cat, your resident pets, and everyone involved.

Rescue and rehoming should always be done with love but also with caution, patience, and proper care.

Look what arrived for me today !!!

I am so very excited. I now have my own author copy without ‘not for resale’ written across it.

It means I have some books to sell at the bark bq fundraiser by Olds Humane Society next Saturday.

I have only bought 50 copies for now so if you’re interested in buying please make sure to attend the fundraiser!

I’ve recently seen some posts with people attempting to rehome their barn cats at only 5 weeks old.

If cats are living on your property, please remember they are still your responsibility. Rehoming too early may feel like a quick solution, but it can cause long-term problems for the kittens and for the people trying to help them later.

I got my very first review on Amazon 🙏.

5 ⭐️

“My ten‑year‑old daughter really enjoyed this book. She connected strongly with Sylvie’s early struggles with breathing and felt empathy for what she went through. She also appreciated the practical tips on how to care for an abandoned kitten, which made the story feel both emotional and useful. Another highlight for her was the mention of Sam & Sawyer, which added warmth and familiarity to the story. Overall, the book left her feeling inspired, informed, and eager to read more.”

Raising Sylvie: A true rescue story

05/30/2026

Today is International Hug Your Cat Day — a perfect day to celebrate the cats who touch our hearts in the biggest ways. 🐾

For me, that will always include Sylvie.

What began as a tiny rescue story has grown into something very special: Raising Sylvie, a true children’s book about warmth, compassion, gentle care, and the smallest lives being worth fighting for.

I’m so excited to share that the Raising Sylvie book launch is coming soon. This story was created for children and families, but it carries a message for all of us: kindness matters, and even the tiniest life can leave a lasting paw print.

Follow along for launch updates, Sylvie’s story, and more from Needy Paws. 💛
