Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes our busiest time of year. We are happy to share that a new veterinarian, Dr. Sylvie Becker, will be joining our team this summer! (More info on Dr. Sylvie to follow soon!). She will be accompanying us on calls while she gets to know the area and our clients.
In the meantime, Dr. Harness remains on maternity leave, so our spring scheduling requires a bit of extra planning.
To help us manage the spring rush, we are asking clients to book routine dental procedures in June or later, if at all possible. Urgent dentals will still be done as needed!
I will be working on Saturdays for the next few months to help us get through everything. These days will fill up quickly, so please book ahead. We appreciate your patience as we handle our regular calls and also try to work in new foals, urgent calls and of course emergencies. Thank you! KG

Happy Holidays from our clinic mascot Ebony, and our entire GEVS team!
We will be closing on Christmas eve at 12, and will re-open on Monday Dec 29 at 8:30 am. As always, emergency service is available over the holidays by calling our office number. Best wishes to all our 2- and 4-legged friends 🎄

Big news! We are so excited to share that Dr. Melanie Harness and her husband Brian are growing their family! She will be heading out for maternity leave on Sept. 26. Dr. Leah Knox and I will be covering Melanie's patients in her absence. Please reach out to us at the office for booking appointments, asking advice etc. Thank you for your kindness, support and understanding!

Our very own Dr. Melanie Harness is certified in VSMT (Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy, or "Chiropractic") and we offer this service to horses in our practice area. VSMT can be beneficial as a treatment option alone or in conjunction with other therapies. If you'd like more information, check out our website or give the office a call!

Please read this important information about our emergency services. As many of you know, the Veterinary world is changing and there are fewer large animal vets serving more animals. Unlike with small animal Veterinary care where you may take your pet to a special emergency vet after hours, our vets work all day and then one vet is on call for the entire night or weekend. While our goal is to provide reliable emergency services at all times of the day or night, it puts a significant strain on our vets' physical and mental wellbeing. We have been getting an increasing number of calls from people who only call us for emergencies and the horses have not had routine care for several years.
A regular/active client is one who has had a horse seen under their ownership within the last 2 years. We believe in being proactive for your horse's health and we recommend an annual physical exam, dental exam and vaccines if indicated for your horse's situation. *Priority for emergency service will be given to regular/active clients*. There are a number of active clients that we can reasonably serve, and if we have not seen you for more than 2 years, we assume you are using another veterinarian or no longer have horses, and your spot may be taken by another client.
If you have not had a horse seen for more than 2 years, we cannot guarantee that we can attend your emergency in a timely way and you may not be able to find another vet to attend, since we are all stretched to our limit. If you really feel that your horse does not need a vet exam (after 2 years) but you would like to remain an active client, please contact our office to keep your file active.
We really appreciate your business and here's to a year of healthy horses!

Coming into the holidays we just wanted to let everyone know our upcoming hours. We will be closing Friday Dec 22 at noon so our staff can spend a bit of extra time with their families. We will re-open next week on Wed Dec 27. Thanks to everyone for the holiday wishes! Extra thanks to Shannon Loughrey and Natalie Price for our gorgeous entryway decorations!

Well summer is flying by! We wanted to update our clients that there have been cases of both West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in Ontario. EEE has been increasing slowly for a few years but is now considered a significant risk and we are recommending vaccination. If your horse has not had the vaccine before, they need 2 shots (an initial and a booster shot). We are also seeing an increase in Potomac horse fever and related illnesses. If your horse goes off feed, please take their temperature right away and call us if they have a fever! A thermometer is an important part of your first aid kit.
