Poor little Gucci definitely had our staff worried this week — but this fabulous girl wasn’t ready to give up her spotlight 💖

After spending 5 days in our ICU recovering from a ruptured pyometra and sepsis, Gucci is officially home with her family! From critical care, transfusion medicine, intensive surgery, round-the-clock monitoring, and lots of TLC, to wagging her way out the door like the tiny icon she is, we couldn’t be happier to see her feeling so much better. ♥️

Gucci reminded all of us just how resilient these little dogs can be — and we’re so proud of her fight. Huge shoutout to her devoted family for trusting us with her care every step of the way.

Feel better soon, Gucci… and keep serving looks ✨🐾💅🏻

This Mother’s Day, don’t forget to think about the furry family members too! 💐🐾

Many popular bouquets and plants can be toxic to pets — especially cats. If you’re celebrating with fresh flowers this weekend, consider choosing pet-safe options to help keep everyone safe at home.

Some pet-friendly favourites include:
🌸 Roses
🌻 Sunflowers
🌼 Gerbera daisies
🌷 Orchids
🌿 Snapdragons

Avoid lilies in homes with cats, as even small exposures can be life-threatening.

If you think your pet may have gotten into a toxic plant or bouquet, contact an emergency clinic right away.

From all of us at KVEC, Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms — human and animal alike 💕

⚠️ Heartworm is here in Ontario — and it’s closer to home than many people realize.

This blood film shows microfilaria (baby heartworms) from a heartworm-positive dog born and raised in Northumberland County. No travel history. No southern rescue. Just a local Ontario dog exposed through mosquito bites. 🩸

Heartworm disease is caused by parasites spread by mosquitoes and can lead to serious heart and lung damage in dogs. The scary part? Many infected dogs show few or no signs until the disease is advanced. 🫀

The good news: heartworm is preventable. Monthly prevention and routine testing are the best ways to protect your pets.

As mosquito season approaches, now is the perfect time to make sure your dog is up to date on their heartworm prevention and annual screening. 🦟🐶❤️

We are proud to announce that we passed our AAHA reaccreditation process yesterday! 🎉

AAHA accreditation signifies that a veterinary hospital has voluntarily passed rigorous evaluations based on over 900 standards covering patient care, diagnostic imaging, surgery, and safety. 🩻🩺📈

Only about 15% of veterinary hospitals in the U.S. and Canada are accredited. This recognition reflects our team’s ongoing commitment to the highest standards in emergency veterinary care—for our patients, their families, and our community. ❤️

Today is World Veterinary Day—and it feels like the right moment to pause and recognize the people who quietly carry so much.

To the veterinarians, technicians, assistants, receptionists, and support staff across the veterinary industry: you show up on the best days and the absolute hardest ones. You celebrate new life, fight tirelessly for the sick, and comfort families through heartbreaking goodbyes. You do it with compassion, skill, and a kind of resilience that often goes unseen.

You are the steady hands in emergencies, the calm voices on the other end of the phone, and the advocates every animal deserves. You carry the weight of decisions that aren’t easy, and you still come back the next day ready to care again.

Thank you for the long hours, the emotional strength, and the endless dedication to patients who can’t speak for themselves. What you do matters more than words can capture—not just to the animals, but to every person who loves them.

Today, and every day, you are deeply appreciated. 🐾❤️

🚨🌸 No Lilies for Kitties 🌸🚨

As we celebrate Easter weekend, those beautiful bouquets can come with a hidden danger for our feline friends.

Lilies are EXTREMELY toxic to cats. Even a small exposure—like brushing against pollen, licking a leaf, or drinking the vase water—can cause acute kidney failure.

⚠️ What to watch for:
• Vomiting
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Drooling

These signs can appear quickly, and without prompt treatment, lily exposure can be fatal.

💡 Important reminders:
• Keep ALL lilies out of homes with cats (this includes Easter lilies, tiger lilies, daylilies, and more)
• Be cautious with mixed bouquets—florists often include lilies
• If you suspect exposure, seek veterinary care immediately—don’t wait for symptoms

We know those spring arrangements are tempting, but when it comes to cats, it’s safest to skip the lilies altogether 🐱💛

🐰🌷 We’re here for your pets this Easter weekend! 🌷🐰

While the Easter Bunny is busy delivering treats (and maybe a few questionable snack choices 👀🍫), we’ll be here to keep your furry family members safe and cared for.

💛 Open Good Friday & all Easter weekend
💛 Ready for emergencies, illness and accidental injury alike
💛 Extra cuddles available (for patients who need some reassurance)

⚠️ As always, patients are seen based on urgency. Stable cases may experience longer wait times over the holiday weekend while our team prioritizes critical patients. We appreciate your patience and kindness—our crew is working hard to care for every pet who needs us.

If your pet gets into something they shouldn’t—or just isn’t acting like themselves—we’ve got you covered.

Wishing you a safe, happy, and chocolate-out-of-reach kind of Easter! 🐣✨
