Tick prevention should START NOW and continue as long as the temperature is zero or above. As temperatures continue to rise, mark your calendars for the following:

Heartworm testing: begins April 15th
Heartworm prevention: begins June 1st

Onion, garlic and chives are members of the allium species of vegetables. Allium species initially cause gastrointestinal irritation, which progresses to red blood cell destruction and anemia. Fresh, dried, and powdered forms are equally toxic, and while dogs are the most commonly affected, cats experience more profound effects. If you suspect your pet has ingested even a small amount, seek veterinary care immediately.

When ingested by pets, chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death. The darker the chocolate (or higher the cacao content), the greater the risk for toxicity. White chocolate has the lowest content while baking chocolate and cocoa powder have the highest concentrations. If you suspect your pet has ingested chocolate of any kind, seek veterinary care immediately.

Xylitol (or Birch Sugar) is used as an artificial sweetener in many sugar-free products, including gum, candy, baked goods, and toothpaste. Initial signs of toxicosis include low blood sugar (vomiting, lethargy and loss of coordination), which can progress to seizures. Liver damage can occur within 12-24 hours, which can also cause secondary issues with abnormal bleeding. If you suspect your pet has ingested Xylitol, seek veterinary care immediately.

DID YOU KNOW - in an attempt to hide from preadators, the Siberian hamster will change from a silvery chinchilla shade to mostly white if it is kept in a room that receives natural light in the winter. They differ from the typical dwarf hamster, having furry feet, smaller ears and a wider dorsal stripe. Thanks to all who participated in yesterday's trivia!
