Region of Waterloo Public Health has identified blacklegged ticks in the region that are positive for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

Please take extra care walking on trails and in grassy areas. Use a repellant for yourself, wear protective clothing, perform tick checks on human and dog family members after a walk, and use a preventative such as Bravecto for your pets.

Fireworks Safety Tips:
Some of these tricks may help to keep your anxious pets safe and feeling secure during holiday celebrations with fireworks.

* Create a "Safe Den": Set up a quiet, windowless area like a closet or bathroom with their favorite blankets and toys. If they use a crate, cover it with a thick duvet to muffle sound, but leave the door open so they don't feel trapped

* Muffle Noise and Light: Close all windows, doors, and curtains to reduce flashes and bangs. Use "white noise" from a fan, TV, or radio
* Do Not Leave Them Alone: Stay home with your pet if possible. Use a calm, soothing voice and slow, firm petting

* Use High-Value Distractions: Lickimats or chew treats keep their minds occupied

* Exercise Early: Take your dog for a long walk to tire them out and allow for bathroom breaks before the noise starts

* Ensure Proper ID: Fireworks are a top cause of pets running away. Ensure your pet is microchipped with up-to-date contact info and your dog is wearing a secure collar with tags

* Escape-Proof Your Home: Check that all fences are secure and keep your dog leashed even in your own yard, as sudden bangs can cause them to bolt over or under obstacles

* Consult Your Vet: If you find that your pet is anxious for fireworks, talk to one of our doctors about prescription anti-anxiety medications before the next holiday
