🚨 Foreign body 🚨🐶📍

This is one of the most common presenting complaints in emergency medicine; a pet may have ingested something they shouldn’t have and we have to investigate.

This dog decided sewing pins were on the menu 😳🪡

Can you see the metallic foreign bodies on these x-rays? Can you tell where they are located? 👀🩻

Luckily, they were almost out of the body already so surgery was not warranted! I can’t imagine eating such a sharp object 😬

True story 🤓 but good thing I did it because she only has one good kidney 😔 it all started with her looking at me funny and pawing her face. We found tooth resorption but I figured I may as well fully work her up- cut to her having a kidney that is no bigger than an acorn 🙁 poor Mill

The only butter yellow I’ve had a chance to don so far this spring 💛 🌼 these are the gowns we wear for our infectious patients such as pneumonia, kennel cough and parvo

POV: investigating a blocked male cat… and finding part of the problem 👀🐱

In this case, I’m extruding the prepuce and you can see a buildup of debris in the distal prepuce. This can be made up of:
🟡 dried urine/crystals
🟡 inflammatory debris
🟡 mucus/urethral plugs
🟡 dirt/litter contamination

Important to note — this wasn’t the actual blockage, but it definitely wasn’t helping. The true obstruction was further up the urethra, which is much more typical.

Male cats are unfortunately very prone to urinary blockages due to their long, narrow urethra. Common contributing factors include:
* urinary crystals or stones
* inflammation (FLUTD/FIC)
* stress
* diet (especially low moisture intake)
* obesity

A cat that cannot urinate, or is having difficulty urinating is a life-threatening emergency 🚨

What are negative/positive for? 🐕

POV: you’re collecting your own blood supply mid-surgery 🩸

This is an autotransfusion — collecting blood from a patient during an emergency (like a splenectomy for a bleeding splenic mass) and giving it right back to them.

When a dog is actively bleeding into their abdomen, every second counts. Sometimes we don’t have time to wait for typed, cross-matched packed red blood cells… or there simply isn’t enough available.

So we use what’s already there.

This blood is:
✔️ immediately available
✔️ perfectly compatible
✔️ often life-saving in critical moments

It’s not always appropriate (case selection matters), but in the right situation, it can stabilize a patient long enough to get them through surgery.

One of those things you may not realize happens behind the scenes🐾

Preparing SMOF for a patient! 🐶💉

SMOF is a type of parenteral nutrition—basically “food through a vein”—used for patients who can’t eat on their own. It’s a blend of soy, medium-chain triglycerides, olive oil, and fish oil, giving essential calories, fats, and nutrients to support recovery.

Patients may need SMOF if they are unable to eat due to severe gastrointestinal disease or critical illness, or if they require additional nutritional support during recovery from surgery or illness and cannot have a feeding tube that utilizes their gut.

We very rarely use SMOF as it is reserved for critical cases, this was my first time seeing it used!
