🌟 Pet of the Week: Zoe! 🌟

Say hello to Zoe, our spunky 4-year-old Dachshund who always makes us smile when she visits Spencer Creek! 🐾

The moment Zoe arrives, she rushes into the clinic to check out our chinchilla 🐭 and then waits oh-so-patiently for her liver treat on the way out. She’s also one of the very few pups who will happily jump right onto our scale — Spencer Creek is the only clinic she’ll do that for! 🩺

At home, Zoe loves nothing more than chasing squirrels and rabbits 🐿️🐇 and enjoying her absolute favourite food — raw steak 🥩.

We love your visits, Zoe — you brighten up the whole clinic every time! 💕

Meet Matt — a valued part of the Spencer Creek Animal Hospital team!

With 18 years in the veterinary industry, Matt brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from emergency hospitals, companion animal clinics, and nearly a decade in veterinary management. We were thrilled to welcome him to our team in December 2022.

Matt’s warm smile and easygoing nature are a comfort to clients and patients alike. Whether he's lending a hand with patients, supporting the team, or sharing a good laugh, Matt jumps in wherever he's needed and brings a positive energy to every corner of the clinic.

When he’s not at work, you’ll find Matt enjoying the outdoors — archery, hiking, biking, and hitting the gym are just a few of his go-to activities. 🏹🚴‍♂️💪

At home, he’s kept company by his beloved Maine C***s, Isabelle and Nando. A true enthusiast of the breed, Matt is our resident Maine C**n expert — and proud of it! 🐱❤️

We’re so grateful to have Matt’s experience, kindness, and dedication as part of the Spencer Creek family!

🐾 Let’s talk about Bordetella!

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a highly contagious respiratory bacteria and one of the main causes of kennel cough in dogs. It spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, shared water bowls, and nose-to-nose contact — especially in places where dogs gather.

💉 Why do we vaccinate for Bordetella?
The Bordetella vaccine helps protect your dog from developing kennel cough, a dry, hacking cough that can be persistent and uncomfortable — and in some cases, lead to more serious infections. Vaccinating helps keep your dog (and other dogs!) safe in social settings.

🗓️ When should my dog be vaccinated?
✔ Puppies can receive their first Bordetella vaccine as early as 8 weeks of age
✔ Dogs who are frequently around other dogs should be vaccinated annually, or every 6 months depending on lifestyle and risk level

🐶 Your dog is at higher risk if they:
– Visit doggy daycare or boarding facilities
– Attend grooming appointments
– Go to training classes or dog parks
– Stay in kennels or travel often

Many boarding and grooming facilities require proof of Bordetella vaccination, so it’s a good idea to keep it current — especially during the busy summer season!

Not sure if your pup is protected? Give us a call at (905) 627-5510— we’re happy to check and get you booked in!

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Emily Naccarato RVT🌟

Meet Emily, one of the compassionate and dedicated members of our team here at Spencer Creek! Emily joined us in October 2021, bringing with her a strong academic background and a lifelong love of animals.

She graduated from the University of Guelph with a BSc in Animal Biology in 2019 and went on to complete her Veterinary Technician training at Sheridan College in 2021. Emily has a special passion for exotic pets and is always expanding her skills to provide the best possible care to our more unique patients 🦎🐇🦜

Before joining our clinic, Emily gained hands-on experience at a wildlife refuge, caring for everything from squirrels and raccoons to rabbits and birds. Her calm demeanor and dedication to animal care make her an incredible asset to our team.

At home, Emily shares her life with her spunky Golden Retriever, Maggie — who insists she’s never done anything mischievous… ever. 🐾😉

We're so lucky to have Emily as part of the Spencer Creek family!

🚫🌽 DANGER: Corn Cobs & Dogs Don't Mix! 🐶

Did you know corn cobs are a serious choking hazard for dogs and can cause life-threatening intestinal blockages? 🛑 Even small pieces can get stuck in their digestive tract and often require emergency surgery to remove.

We know pups love to sneak scraps—but never let your dog chew or play with corn cobs, even after a BBQ!

👉 If your dog eats a corn cob, call your vet immediately. Time is critical.

Keep your furry friends safe this summer! 💛

🌟 Pet of the Week: Mirabelle! 🌟

Meet Mirabelle, our adorable 6½-month-old Cockapoo who stopped by this week to check her weight and pick up her next dose of flea, tick, and heartworm prevention 🐾🦟. This sweet girl is growing bigger and cuter every single day! 💕

Mirabelle’s mom told us her favourite thing about Spencer Creek Animal Hospital is our friendly and competent staff and the flexibility to get an appointment easily — we’re so happy to hear that! 🩺

When she’s at home, Mirabelle’s favourite activities are playing with her treat ball 🎾 and proudly carrying her stuffed bunny around the house 🐇. And when it’s snack time? Cheese, please! 🧀

Thanks for visiting, Mirabelle — we can’t wait to see how much you’ve grown next time! 🥰

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Sharisse Thompson RVT🌟

Say hello to Sharisse! She joined the Spencer Creek Animal Hospital team in the summer of 2021, bringing warmth, skill, and a love for animals of all shapes and sizes.

A St. Clair College graduate (Class of 2017), Sharisse is passionate about veterinary care — especially when it comes to rabbits, dental procedures, and coffee! ☕🐰🦷 She’s always happiest when snacks are nearby and never turns down a good treat (who can blame her?).

Sharisse lives in Orkney — a true country girl at heart — with her husband, her Golden Retriever mix Suzie, and her sweet rabbit Hazel. 🐶🐇

Outside the clinic, you’ll often find Sharisse enjoying the great outdoors, hiking, horseback riding, playing piano, or teeing off on the golf course. She brings calm, care, and a gentle sense of humor to everything she does, making her an incredible part of our team.

We’re lucky to have Sharisse’s expertise, compassion, and snack-loving spirit at Spencer Creek!

🩺🐶🐱 Why Annual Physical Exams Matter for Your Pet 🐾

Just like us, our pets benefit from yearly check-ups to stay happy and healthy!
An annual physical exam helps us:

✅ Detect health issues early
✅ Monitor weight, teeth, skin & joint health
✅ Stay up to date on vaccines & parasite prevention
✅ Catch age-related changes before they become serious

Even if your pet seems healthy, many conditions can go unnoticed without a professional exam. Prevention is always better (and more affordable) than treatment!

📅 Call us today to book your pet’s annual exam: 905-627-5510

Let’s keep your furry family members thriving! 💚

🌟 Pet of the Week: Maisy! 🌟

Say hello to Maisy, a beautiful 4-year-old Doberman who came in for an exam with Dr. Kennedy and a nail trim with our amazing RVTs — and she was an absolute sweetheart the whole time! 🐾💅

Maisy’s mom shared that their favourite thing about Spencer Creek Animal Hospital is our friendly staff — and we couldn’t be happier to have such kind words (and such a lovely patient!).

Maisy loves to fetch balls 🎾 and her all-time favourite treat is cheese 🧀. Just look at that adorable face while she waits patiently for a liver treat — how could anyone say no?! 😍

Thanks for visiting, Maisy — you made our day! 💖

Meet Amanda — a long-time and much-loved member of the Spencer Creek Animal Hospital team!

Amanda joined us after graduating from Seneca College in 2013, and she’s been a vital part of our clinic ever since. With her genuine, contagious smile and a wealth of knowledge, Amanda confidently handles all aspects of clinic life — even feline grooming! 🐱✂️

She shares her home with a fun and furry crew: her husband AJ, their son Karsen, a Golden Retriever named Jonesy, and a spoiled chinchilla named Kovu. 🐶🐾

Amanda’s passion for animal care has taken her across the globe — she once traveled to South Africa with a group called Veterinary Nurses in the Wild, where she treated lions, tigers, and giraffes. Oh my! 🦁🐯🦒

When she's not at work, Amanda enjoys camping, reading, playing video games, and making memories with her family.

We’re so lucky to have Amanda’s experience, compassion, and upbeat energy as part of the Spencer Creek family!

🐶🌳 Thinking about a trip to the dog park?
Dog parks can be a fun place for dogs to socialize and burn off energy — but they’re not the right fit for every pup.

Here’s a quick look at the “why” and “why not” of dog parks:

✅ Why dog parks can be great:
• Dogs get off-leash play and exercise 🐾
• Social interaction with other dogs
• Mental stimulation in a new environment
• Can be a fun outing for confident, well-socialized dogs

🚫 Why dog parks might not be ideal:
• Risk of illness or parasites if other dogs aren’t vaccinated
• Potential for dog fights or rough play
• Not all dogs read each other’s body language well
• Can be overwhelming for shy, anxious, or reactive dogs

💡 Tips if you go:
✔ Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccines and parasite prevention
✔ Supervise closely and be ready to step in
✔ Know your dog’s comfort level and body language
✔ Avoid peak busy times if your dog prefers calmer environments

Every dog is different — and that’s okay! Some prefer a quiet trail walk or a playdate with a known friend instead. 🐕
