Smoke advisory! 🔥

Attention all pet owners! With the Wildfires taking a hold of North-Western Ontario, the smoke is having a real effect on the entire province. We are sure you have seen the warnings and health risks online, but please remember that your pets can be affected by the smoke too!

Higher Risk Pets 🦜 🐶: If you have a dog or cat with a short snout or known respiratory illness, they are at a higher risk. This also includes pets with cardiac illnesses such as cardiomyopathies and heart murmurs. All exotic animals, but especially birds are very sensitive to air quality changes.

What to Do ❤️: Please keep your pets inside as much as possible while the air quality warnings are in effect. Keep windows and doors closed and utilize air purifiers and fans if possible. Always ensure your pet(s) have access to clean, cool water.

Monitor for signs of 🚨:
- Heat intolerance.
- Difficulty breathing, coughing, wheezing.
- Redness and irritation to the airways and eyes.
- Pale or sticky gums.
- Lethargy or weakness.

Have concerns for your pet or questions on how to keep them safe during these times? Call the clinic at 705-560-7226. If your pet is experiencing an urgent concern, please call VetWise at 705-805-1582. Stay safe everyone!

Another week of high temperatures is here! ☀️ Always remember to:
- Keep walks to early morning/ later evenings to avoid peak temperatures. Avoid hot cement by keeping to shaded or grassy areas on walks.
- Keep extra water on hand for yourself and your pet(s).
- Never leave you pet(s) in a parked vehicle. Even a few minutes can be dangerous!
- Monitor for signs of overheating such as excessive panting, rapid breathing, lethargy, thick drooling, weakness, collapse, and vomiting.

Exotic pets such as rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs are especially sensitive to heat. Ensure their enclosures are kept out of the direct sun and they have constant access to clean, cool water.

If you have concerns for your pet, please call the clinic at 705-560-7226. After hours? Contact VetWise at 705-805-1582.

🍁 ☀️ A safe summer is a fun summer! ☀️🍁
With the warmer months finally here, Luna wanted to highlight some general safety tips to help keep this summer fun for everyone! Whether you are celebrating from home this summer or traveling, there are many easy ways to keep our pets happy and healthy!
- Always have clean, cool water accessible for your pets. Leaving the house? Bring a sufficient amount of water for both you and your pets to enjoy!
- Keep outdoor exercise to the earlier or later times of day to prevent being out when the temperature is highest
- Offer cool areas to rest whether indoors or outdoors, such as areas with shade or fans
- Do not leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even with the windows cracked. Even a few minutes can be dangerous!
- Monitor for signs of overheating such as:
• Excessive panting
• Rapid breathing
• Lethargy
• Thick drooling
• Weakness/ collapse
• Vomiting

Exotic pets such as rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs are especially sensitive to heat and it is important to ensure their enclosures are kept out of direct sunlight and they have constant access to clean, cool water.

Have an urgent concern about your pet? Contact the clinic as soon as possible. If after hours, contact VetWise at 705-805-1582.
