We want to take some time to shout out our amazing receptionist Deanne! She is the most hardworking, loyal and talented receptionist we could ever hope to have.

Since we missed posting her on actual veterinary reception appreciation week 😔, we don’t want to miss the opportunity to let her know how special she is and how lucky we are to have her. Thanks for all you do to keep our team running efficiently and helping us help all of your fur babies.

Blu wants you to know that despite the weather outside right now, "Blu" skies are coming!🌞

Believe it or not, the weather is starting to warm up so we put together a little check list of important things to consider now that the snow will be starting to melt...again...

We have already seen a handful of lice cases at the clinic, so we want to remind our clients that now is the perfect time to start your pet on parasite prevention until next winter!

Darlie also has some availability for Grooming in the next couple of weeks to get you pup in for a spring tidy!!

Make sure you check your pets Microchip information and make sure your contact info is all up to date! Stop by the clinic any time to have your pet scanned to make sure their chip still reads or if you need the number to get the info updated!

Have questions about parasite prevention, or want to request a refill or book a grooming appointment? Give us a call and lets chat!

✨️IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR BOARDING CLIENTS✨️

Effective February 14th 2025, we will no longer be offering boarding at our clinic. This will not affect any bookings made prior to this date.

We know that finding a reputable boarding facility can be stressful, so we have made a small list of boarding facilities to help make this transition easier. Some of our staff members also offer pet sitting services and may be available as well; you can call the clinic anytime to make an inquiry (in home, house sitting and drop- in visits depending on location and length of time needed). To access this list please call, email or facebook message the clinic.

Please also ask about our travel form that you can fill out and have on file in the event your pet sitter needs to bring your animal in to see us. This form covers who is allowed to authorize medical care in the even you are not reachable and steps to take to ensure your pet is receiving the care the need!

If you have any questions please reach out to us.

Our Story

South Side Animal Hospital is one of Edmonton's longest-standing practices and is proud to be one of only a few clinics in the Edmonton area to achieve accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). We believe in practicing high quality medicine but also pride ourselves on being a welcoming, approachable, and compassionate clinic. We want you and your pets to become a part of our family.

In 1952, classmates Dr. Jack McManus and Dr. Gordon Nimmons established South Side Animal Hospital as the first small animal practice in south Edmonton. They decided that in order to become a higher quality practice they should voluntarily undergo accreditation with the American Animal Hospital Association starting in 1964. This was above the mandatory provincial accreditation to maintain a veterinary practice in Alberta. They also became actively involved in the Edmonton Association of Small Animal Veterinarians, Edmonton Veterinarians Emergency Clinic, and various other community groups.

Dr. Heather Steele first came to South Side Animal Hospital as an owner when her cat Sasha needed treatment for ear mites. She found the clinic to be knowledgeable, friendly, and caring and decided to do her third year summer practicum for veterinary medicine at South Side under Dr. Ed Neufeld. Dr. Neufeld helped build her love of small animal medicine and when the opportunity arose to come and work with Dr. Neufeld as a veterinarian, she happily accepted. Upon Dr. Neufeld’'s retirement, Dr. Steele became the clinic owner and director in 2006. She and her team of dedicated animal health professionals have stayed true to South Side's long standing vision for the highest standard of care, strong professional and community involvement, and an approachable, family-focused practice with excellent customer service.
