🌡️☀️ Heat Wave Safety Tips for Pet Owners! ☀️🌡️
With this extreme heat, our pets rely on us to keep them safe and comfortable. Here’s what every pet owner should know during a heat wave:
✅ Hydration is crucial:
Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water. Add ice cubes to their water bowl to help keep it chilled. Bring water with you if you’re going out.
✅ No parked cars — ever:
Even with the windows cracked, a parked car can become deadly in minutes. Leave pets at home if they can’t come inside with you.
✅ Limit exercise:
Avoid strenuous walks and play during peak heat. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler.
✅ Protect their paws:
Hot pavement, asphalt, or sand can burn paws. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet!
✅ Provide shade and a cool space:
Make sure outdoor pets have access to shade and cool shelter. Bring them inside if possible during extreme heat.
✅ Watch for signs of heatstroke:
Be alert for excessive panting, drooling, rapid heartbeat, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse. If you notice any of these, move your pet to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, and call your vet immediately.
✅ Groom appropriately:
Regular brushing can help remove excess fur, but don’t shave double-coated breeds — their coats help regulate temperature.
✅ Keep brachycephalic breeds extra safe:
Breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, Boxers, and Persians are more prone to overheating. Be extra cautious and keep them in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible.
