That is a very sad face, and no wonder!

Our patient presented to the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic with drooling, pain and lethargy after chewing on a choke cherry branch the day before - owners were concerned about possible cyanide poisoning.

However, an initial physical exam discovered a fever and extreme oral pain on the left side - this type of pain and discomfort necessitates sedation to explore further. Sedation revealed an inflamed tonsil as well as inflammation along the jaw and back of the throat, which was undoubtedly very uncomfortable. All of these findings lead us to conclude that there may have been a splinter or other type of pe*******on from the chewed stick, despite the fact that nothing was currently present. This led to cellulitis and a whole lot of unhappiness. Ouch!

Anti inflammatories for pain and swelling, antibiotics for infection and our patient should soon be feeling MUCH better, hopefully turning that sad face into a wagging tail!

Oh Draco!

Draco came to the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic after eating something he shouldn't, a relatively common complaint. And like so many dogs before him, he learned that what went down must come up. Don't worry Draco, the worst is over now!

Ding came to the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic with a urinary blockage - one of the more common feline emergencies we see.

Some cats can be prone to forming small crystals in their urine - these crystals often resemble sand or grit, or can form bigger clumps of debris as they stick together. Cats can develop crystals due to stress, infection, diet, genetics or a combination of factors. Male cats have a long, narrow urethra and as this gritty urine passes through, the urethra can quite literally become clogged, or "blocked", preventing the bladder from emptying effectively.

Signs an owner may notice : straining to urinate, frequent trips to the litter box, producing very small amounts of urine (often bloody), trying to urinate in odd places, licking or chewing the ge***al area, vocalizing, distress, pain, vomiting, and even collapse. Signs may occur gradually over a few days if the cat has a partial blockage or quite suddenly with a full blockage. Immediate veterinary care is crucial.

Treatment depends on the severity and condition of the patient, and can vary from outpatient care to full hospitalization. Each case is different.

If you suspect your cat has a urinary blockage, seek veterinary care without delay. A cat cannot go a long period of time without urinating, and delaying treatment by even a few hours can drastically change the outcome. Cats can die without immediate veterinary intervention.

After treatment, Ding is now back with his family! Exactly the kind of outcome we love πŸ™‚

Sweet little Otto is experiencing a world of regret...he helped himself to too many melatonin and needed to visit the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic. Fortunately we were able to make him vomit and no harm done. Don't feel bad, it's all going to be okay, Otto!

It doesn't get much better than an armful of kittens!!

Our friends from Bide Awhile were in for their weekly visit, and Dr Katie got to enjoy a little cuddle time after health checks and vaccines were finished! Who can say no to a kindle of kittens?

If you are interested in adding to your furry family, head over to bideawhile.org! Remember, we just provide the healthcare...Bide Awhile handles all adoptions 😊 A good thing, too, because otherwise Dr Katie might convince herself that she really needs three new kittens!

Experienced animal emergency and critical care.

The Metro Animal Emergency Clinic was established in 1997 when veterinarians from metro Halifax and surrounding communities determined that a permanent after hours emergency service was needed to provide the very best care for their patients. Up to that point, all veterinary hospitals did their own emergency on call....if you had an emergency you would phone your veterinarian and they would meet you at your regular hospital to treat your pet. An after hours hospital would mean that there was always fully trained and experienced staff available, without prior notice or appointment being necessary, and emergencies could be dealt with immediately upon arrival.

The different veterinary hospitals of metro and surrounding areas came together to create this unique clinic. The Metro Animal Emergency Clinic is owned by our members; your referring hospital chooses to send their emergency and critical care patients to us to provide the very best, up to date emergency and critical care possible. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We see only emergency and medical care patients; we do not see patients for vaccines, spays/neuters, dentistry, wellness checks or dietary consults. We leave the day to day health concerns for your pet in the hands of the experts, your family veterinary clinic, which knows your pet so well. We are strictly an emergency care facility.

The Metro Animal Emergency Clinic is fully staffed at all times with emergency experienced veterinarians, technicians and support staff. It’s all we do ! Whether your emergency happens at 2 pm or 2 am we are ready and available to help. We are centrally located at 201 Brownlow Ave, Unit 32 in the Burnside Industrial Park in Dartmouth.
